"You have a key. You know you can just come right in," I told Sammy as I opened the door for him.
"I like letting you know that I'm here," Sammy said.
"Hi, Sam," Danny greeted him from in the kitchen.
"Hi, Daniel. Ooh smells good in here," Sammy commented as he walked towards the kitchen.
"I'm taking advantage of Lena being gone so I can have a nice night with Lex," Danny informed Sammy.
"Lexi! Sammy's here!" I hollered for my sister.
She came stepping down the stairs and wrapped him up in a hug.
"Keep her away for a long time. We don't want to see her home before midnight," Lexi joked.
"Oh, my God. Okay we're leaving now," I said, waving goodbye.
Sammy drove to the Thai restaurant he had wanted to try. We had to wait for our table so we just sat and talked about how our day had been and what errands we had to run throughout the week.
The hostess called out Sammy's name and we stood up to follow her to our seats. I always enjoyed sitting across from Sammy at restaurants. I liked the way he looked over every option just to go with something he would normally pick anyways. Or how he would choose a drink for me because he knew I would never be able to make up my own mind.
He set down the menu and then looked up at me with a mischievous grin.
"What's new in Lena land?" Sammy questioned me.
"What?" I asked, addressing his smile.
"How's the bar?"
"Okay, so I ran into Jake at work? Is that what you're trying to get at?"
"Yeah. How was it?"
"Who told you?"
"Jake did."
"Of course."
"And Nell."
"Nell did?"
"Yeah. But he was nice to you right?"
"He was fucking weird. It's just weird. I don't even really want to talk about it."
"Why's it so weird? He likes you. He's just awkward."
"Jake isn't really awkward."
"He is with you."
"Yeah, well I don't know why he's like that."
"It's because of whatever happened after you graduated."
Yikes. That was just a little triggering. I had to change the subject. I didn't want to talk about Jake anymore.
"Hey, I'm here with you. Why do you want to talk about Jake, huh?" I asked him.
"I just wish you guys got along again."
I wasn't going to tell him. I had sworn a long time ago I was not going to come between him and his brother. I didn't say anything about it.
"Well what's new in Sammy land?" I asked, trying to change the subject from Jake.
"I'm just so fucking lonely."
"How can you say you're lonely when I'm literally right in front of you?"
"You know what I mean. I want a girlfriend."
"I'm a girl and I'm your friend."
"Don't you ever get lonely?"
