I woke up in the morning with my throat on fire. One nostril was stuffed, the other was seeping snot. I felt miserable. I groaned as I got out of bed. I made my way to the bathroom and searched for any medicine we had. Lexi was already at work and Danny was slipping his shoes on.
"You don't look so good, bud," he mentioned.
"I think I'm sick," I told him.
"I'd pick you up something but I gotta go to work. You can check our bathroom, Lex might have some DayQuil."
"Thanks."
"Feel better. I'll see you tonight."
I climbed the stairs to their perfectly organized bedroom and looked through their medicine cabinet. It had no medicine whatsoever. I knew Sammy had the day off so I sent him a text asking if he felt sick, too.
Sammy 🦶

💕It must have been something I picked up from the bar. I decided to relax until he got to the house so I read some of Little Women. I liked it when I was feeling sentimental. Forty five minutes later I could hear the front door opening. I was expecting him to come straight to my room and check on me. I was too tired to get up so I just stayed in bed. He would be in soon enough.
There was a knock on the door and I got up to answer it, coughing along the way. I opened the door all the way, inviting Sammy in. It wasn't Sammy though.
I grabbed my fluffy robe off the back of my door and pulled it on really fast.
"Hey, you," Jake said awkwardly.
I didn't say anything I just stared at him and then I went to take in a deep breath but I choked on it, coughing into my elbow.
"Sorry. Sam got called into the restaurant so he asked me to bring this stuff to you," he explained, lifting up a grocery bag.
I held my hand out for the bag. He gave it to me and then gave me a weak, awkward little smile. He looked around my bedroom, which made me a little uncomfortable but I was too sick to actually care.
He stood in the doorway and then finally let his eyes meet mine.
"Sam asked me to take your temperature," he informed me, a bit of pink spreading across his cheeks.
"I can take my own temperature," I assured him.
"Okay."
I went to my bathroom and found the thermometer in the medicine cabinet. I turned it on and put it under my tongue as I made my way back to my bedroom.
Jake was leaning against my wall, staring at a picture of me and Josh that I kept framed on my bookshelf. On the shelf under that was one of me with Lexi, Ronnie and Danny. And below that was one of Sammy, with his arm slung over my shoulders.
It was almost as if I could read Jake's mind. He could tell that he was missing. And he knew there were plenty of pictures of the two of us, whether they were alone or in a group of people.
I kept those pictures in a shoebox under my bed. He wouldn't see any of them unless he went snooping.
The thermometer went off and I pulled it out.
"97.6," I said out loud.
"Probably just a cold. Sam made you some soup. It's in the fridge. You just have to heat it up when you're ready," Jake said.
