Joe's POV
I lay down on the couch with a tub of my favorite ice cream in my hand. Usually I don't indulge like this during the season, but a break up is an exception to my strict diet.
I turn on the tv and pull up HBO Max to watch Game of Thrones. I open the tub of ice cream and scoop out a big spoonful of the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
Halfway through my second episode of Game of Thrones, my mom calls. I pause the show and the phone.
"Hello?"
"Joe, sweetie, how are you?" My mom asks. I sigh.
"Not good," I mutter, staring down at the tub of ice cream. My mom clicks her tongue and sighs.
"It's okay, honey. Break ups can be hard, but you'll power through."
"How'd you know it was a break up?" I ask with a frown.
I hadn't told my mom anything and, as far as I know, my break up hasn't made it to the papers already.
"Mia told me. And trust me, her explanation for breaking up with you is something I can agree with." My mom explains.
"You're defending her? What did I do that both of you can agree on?" I question. My mom sighs.
"Sweetie, Mia and I can't be the only ones who have noticed that you have become pretty conceited over the last couple of months. You're letting the fame of being a professional football player get to your head," my mom explains. I sigh.
"Yeah. I've been told that a lot lately. How do I fix this, mom? I love Mia and I don't want her to be gone from my life," I say.
"If you want to fix this, you need to stop caring for only yourself. You need to care for Mia and Kara too. And don't pretend to care. You have to care for real," my mom says. I frown.
"What makes you think that I don't care for real?"
"I don't know. From what I'm told, you care more about your career than anything else, including Mia and Kara." My mom replies. I sigh. I feel like our conversation came full circle and we're discussing how selfish I've apparently become again.
"I did say that. And I swear I regret it," I say. My mom sighs and I can almost see her shaking her head on the other end of the phone.
"For your sake, I hope you do regret saying that. Tomorrow, I want you to talk to your teammates about how to bring Mia back to you. I'm sure they'll be able to help,"
My mom hangs up and I pull my phone away from my ear. I open my photos and swipe through photos of Mia and I. I need to fix this.
I've never met any other girl like Mia and I love her too much to let her go.
*
I yawn as I pull on my practice jersey. I stayed up way too late watching Game of Thrones and now I'm paying the price for it.
Ja'Marr walks over to me and sits down next to me.
"Hey Joey. Stay up too late watching Game of Thrones and eating chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream?" He asks. I frown.
"That was oddly specific, but, yes, I did stay up too late doing exactly that." I say as I yawn again. Ja'Marr laughs.
"You're my best friend. I know how you try to cope when you go through a break up. You know you're not supposed to consume all that sugar and carbs right now, right?" Ja'Marr explains. I roll my eyes.
"At least I wasn't drinking my sorrows away. Then I'd be depressed and have a massive headache at practice," I say. Ja'Marr shrugs.
"That's true. Look, I'm willing to help you get Mia back if you want me to." Ja'Marr says. I frown.
