“They went into the Forest of Death,” Roger explained, gently laying Ravenna on the bed.
The colour quickly drained from Lynn’s face. “What? How can that be?”
“How should I know what they were doing there?”
“But who was there? Who attacked them?”
“I don’t know, some creature... Never seen anything like it before.”
“Are you all right? You’re all bloody!”
“No, I’m perfectly fine, that’s not my blood.”
Voices came from somewhere far away, but soon Ravena slowly opened her eyes to meet her parents’ worried faces.
“What... what happened?” she asked in a low voice.
“That strange creature attacked us, but Dad came and saved us,” Agnese answered, leaning over the bed. “Don’t you remember?”
Ravenna shook her head.
“Don’t move, that thing hurt you,” Lynn said in a soft voice. “It’s all right now, you’ll get better soon.”
“Well, I’ll go then,” Roger sighed. “I have work to do.”
“Okay, but be careful. I don’t want anything to happen to you either.”
“Whatever,” he just brushed it off and quickly left the room.
“How are you feeling?” Agnese asked anxiously, turning her head to face Ravenna.
“It hurts,” she whispered through gritted teeth.
Lynn sat on the edge of the bed and patted her head. “Don’t worry, I’ll heal you, just relax and close your eyes.”
The girl obeyed without resistance. Agnese watched with curiosity as Lynn carefully placed her hands on her chest. It took her a few minutes to concentrate, but soon her hands began to glow blue. Agnese had never seen anything like it before. The bright glow reminded her of the moonlight she saw in the forest when day suddenly turned into night. The light gradually covered Ravenna’s body. She couldn’t see anything but felt a pleasant warmth enveloping her that slowly eased the pain until it finally disappeared.
“What was that?” Ravenna opened her eyes in surprise. “Why doesn’t it hurt anymore?”
“I told you I’d heal you.”
“But how? What did you do?” She couldn’t believe her eyes as she looked at her perfectly healthy leg. “Not even a scratch left!”
“I can’t tell you, it’s a secret for now,” Lynn smiled, but soon her face turned stern. “I know you don’t like it, but I need to know exactly what happened in the forest.”
Ravenna let out a deep sigh.
“I’m to blame for everything that happened,” Agnese admitted. “I suggested we go to the lake, and that’s where we got attacked. I tried to protect her, but I couldn’t. The creature was much bigger and stronger than me.”
“I believe you did your best, but most importantly, that you’re both safe now.”
Ravenna remained silent, thinking, still unable to believe what happened. She wanted to confess everything, to express all her emotions, to show how scared she was when the creature almost tore her apart, but for some reason, she couldn’t. All she felt at the moment was some kind of emptiness. It seemed more like a dream than reality, but Agnese was also with her and could testify it was real, couldn’t she? But what about the fire that appeared seemingly out of nowhere and then disappeared as if it had never been there?
