As promised, Ravenna took the map back to Neptune the next morning. Although it was still quite early, he was already sitting on the floor with his books and didn’t hear her enter. He only turned around when a shadow slid across the floor in front of him.

“I didn’t think you’d come this early.”

The girl unfolded the map and sat down on the floor nearby. “Can I ask you something?”

“You can,” he urged.

“You said you drew that map, so you visited all those places?”

“No, I’ve only been in the Shadow Kingdom, using the first gate, because I’m not sure how to use the second one. I only know about the other places from books.”

“Are you sure those places are real?”

“Yes, as real as they can be.”

“Could we check them together?”

“I don’t think it’d be that easy, the tunnels are long and confusing, even with the map there’s a high chance of getting lost. And there’s no other way to get to those secret places because the gates are only underground.”

“But you said you checked one of them.”

“Yeah, but I got lucky because I know someone who lives there.”

The girl’s eyes widened. “People live in those kingdoms?”

“Of course, they do. What did you expect?” Neptune sat in silence for a minute. “These are unusual worlds. The books say they are inhabited by special people.”

“Special?” Ravenna sat down next to him and looked at the book in front of him with interest, although she couldn’t understand a word.

“People who can do something special, like teleport to another place in a second or cast spells.”

“Do you really understand what’s written in those books?” she frowned. “Maybe you made a mistake somewhere?”

“No, it’s the truth, that person living in the Shadow Kingdom is also using magic. I saw it with my own eyes.”

“And how do I know you’re not making this up?” Ravenna said angrily. “It sounds more like a fever dream, it can’t be real.”

“It can, and it’s real because I’m special too,” he retorted. “I can show you.”

“And what can you do? Turn all these books into a pile of dust?”

“Wait a minute and you’ll see.”

Neptune took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Only a few minutes later, Ravenna noticed that the book in front of him was barely moving. It slowly rose from the floor and began to circle around them. The girl watched in amazement as more books rose from the shelves and spiralled around faster and faster, giving the same feeling as yesterday, as if the wind had got inside without affecting anything else in the room. After another minute, the books stopped spinning and returned neatly to their places.

Neptune opened his eyes. “How about that?”

“It looks... stunning...” Ravenna still couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “Can you show me more?”
