“Ravenna, we have to run!” Felicia rushed into the room, terrified. “They tracked us down! My father could show up at any moment!”
The girl leapt from the bed. “Really?”
“Hurry up and pack your stuff!”
Ravenna nodded and quickly started stuffing her sleeping bag into her backpack before grabbing her mirror and some food supplies. Her focus briefly moved to the daggers that her friend had given her. She wasn’t sure if she should keep them or not, but she didn’t have time to consider, so she strapped them to her thighs in the hopes that she would have the courage to use them if needed.
Felicia was packing her bag too, but suddenly the ground trembled and a deafening explosion occurred. The side of the summer house turned into ruins in a second and fireballs shot out in all directions. The girl jumped to shield her friend from the flying debris caused by the blast wave. Ravenna felt a rush of heat pass through her whole body, even though her eyes were tightly closed.
When the danger subsided, Felicia said, “Stay here, I’ll be right back,” and hurried to the front door while covering her mouth. But no matter how hard the girl tried, she couldn’t force them open—they were blocked.
“Fia!” Trying to see her through the smoke, Ravenna called. “Where are you?”
“I’m fine,” she replied, and soon the girl noticed her silhouette getting closer. “But we’ll have to find another way out. Don’t worry, I’ll figure something out.”
“Maybe we could get out of the window?”
“I don’t know, we have to get there first. Wait a little longer, okay?”
After Ravenna nodded, Felicia looked around, but was unable to see much through the smoke, so she had to hold onto the wall to check the only available window. Convinced that it was possible to escape, the girl went back to her friend and hugged her as if saying goodbye. The fire had already spread throughout the room—Ravenna realised that there was only a slim chance of getting out.
“Ravenna… there’s something I didn’t tell you,” Felicia said in a trembling voice. “But I never imagined things would turn out like this... I thought my father would never find me...”
The girl tried to comfort her by saying, “It’s not your fault that he found you.”
“No, you don’t understand... my father is searching for you as well as for me. I don’t know why, but I still tried to protect you because... because you’re my friend. I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, even though I knew from the beginning, from the day we met.”
“But how?”
“Eden told me. He saw you hiding in the bushes and claimed to know who you were.”
For a minute, Ravenna stood there, staring at her with wide, frightened eyes. The girl didn’t appear to notice the fire that was raging all around her.
“It’s okay that you didn’t tell me, I hid something too...”
Felicia was taken aback as she asked, “What?”
“Remember when I told you about the mirror that would take me to my mother? It led me to you, which is how we got together. However, the mirror stopped shining after that,” she said, her lip quivering. “How can I find my mother if it’s not working?”
