I stared out of my window and waited for the mailman to come with the daily trash. I guess it's just bills like always, I thought. Finally, the mailman left. I hurried to the mailbox, and found three envelopes. One was addressed to my deceased mother, who had a separate bank account that dad still hadn't closed since her death 10 years earlier. The second, an electric bill dad had to fill out and pay, was addressed to him. The third and final one was addressed to me.
This is impossible, I thought, I hardly ever get letters, let alone anything. I decided to open the envelope. It was an invitation to a party. A party! My first party ever! That wasn't even the best part, though. It was an invitation to my best friend's sweet 16th party! I smiled and slipped the card in my room.
"Avery!" Dad shouted. "Did you get the mail?" "Yes, dad." I replied calmly. "There was a reminder to close mom's account, the electric bill, and an invitation to go to a birthday party." "They know I refuse to close her account and we don't have much-" he stopped, and gave me a weird look. "What was the other thing?" "I got invited to a birthday party." I answered. "You? A party?" he laughed. "Oh, please!" I sighed. Just as I was about to go to my room, he said, "You can go." "Really?" I asked. "Yeah," he answered. "Now will you go away?" "Ohmygosh, thank you!" I squealed. "Now, get back to your chores!" he barked.
My dad doesn't sound like the nicest person ever, but he's trying. Ever since my mom died in a car crash when I was six, he had been an emotional, alcoholic, ill-tempered wreck. He had been fired from 3 jobs in the past five years, so I was the only one making money in the family. The other ugly truth was that I had been a mess as well. With hardly any friends until just last year, a dead mother, an alcoholic, almost abusive father, depression, and endless thoughts of suicide, it gets really difficult to just be happy with what I do have.
I called Caroline, my best friend. Her birthday was next week, and I was so happy that her birthday would be my first party ever! "Hello?" her voice was like the female version of Morgan Freeman's. "Caroline!" I exclaimed. "I can't wait for the party!" "Oh, great!" her excitement matched mine. "I can't wait to see you there!" "Yeah," I said. "Are you okay?" she asked. "Yeah," I replied. "It's just that, it'll be awkward for me since this is my first party." "That's okay," she assured. "You don't have to get me anything, by the way." "Oh, okay." I said. "I have to go, bye." "Bye!" Caroline replied. I hung up. This was going to be interesting, and not just because of the party.
I know, it's not that interesting yet. I don't expect many readers. Avery doesn't meet any of the characters until either chapter 5 or 6. I still hope you enjoy!
