"Sit up straighter, we can't let them think we raised such an unworthy child." Jay's father snapped at him, hitting him lightly on the shoulder.
Jay had to force himself to hold back a remark aimed no-so-kindly towards his father, and instead sat up straighter in his seat. He kept his hands folded in his lap, subtly picking at the fingernail of his thumb while his leg bounced up and down in anticipation.
Jay's father was a man who got what he wanted, and what he wants now is to find a young, beautiful girl for the boy to marry.
Jay thought it was absolutely outrageous. He was only nineteen, way too young to even think about marrying anybody. He didn't want to do this.
His father checks his watch, "They'll be here any moment, remember your manners son."
The moment he said it the door to the dining room was opened by a servant, and entered a family of four. There was the father, who looked just like someone his dad would be all buddy buddy with. The mother, who looked bored already. The young woman who Jay was set to marry walked beside her mother, and Jay groaned inwardly in his head.
Don't get him wrong, she was beautiful, but Jay could already tell he had no interest in her romantically. He didn't want to get married.
As soon as those thoughts entered his brain, his inner thoughts were immediately cut off when he sees the fourth member of the family. Their son.
The boy walks shyly behind his entire family, hands clasped behind his back, his head bent down slightly. There were strands of his dark brown hair dangling in front of his eyes, and he had to move his head to shake them away.
Jay's breath was stuck in his throat as he watched the boy bow to him and his father before taking a seat.
The conversation between the six of them started, but Jay wasn't saying much at all, and neither was the other boy.
Jay's father was practically talking for Jay, telling the family everything about him so he didn't even need to open his mouth. He just kept his eyes on his plate, and occasionally glancing to the boy who was eating shyly still, his head down.
"Jay," his father's voice rang in his ear. Jay's eyes snapped form the other boy to his father. "Sir?" He asked, unsure of what the man had just said.
"I was just asking if you could tell the young lady a little bit about yourself." Jay could tell his father was putting up a nice facade in front of the family. He wanted to tell them the truth. He wanted to say he doesn't want to get married, that he has no interest in their daughter, but he couldn't do that.
The dinner went on and eventually all the food had been eaten and stomachs were full.
"Jay, why don't you show this nice, young lady around?" Jay's father suggested, standing up alon with everyone else. Jay inwardly roleld his eyes, but stood up nonetheless and lead the girl out of the rom.
He casted one look back to see the boy reamining sitting at the table, and Jay was surprised when his eyes were already on the older as he walked away.
Jay felt his heart thrum in his chest, but soon the boy is out of sight and Jay is alone with the girl.
"Listen," she starts off, stopping them in the hallway, "I know your father is pushing you into this, and I know that you have no interedt because you havent looked at me more than once,"
