Pepper's House
July 9th, 2010

One month had passed since Bella's birthday and there was still no news on Tony. Every headline for the past three months had been about his kidnapping and now they were all about his presumed death. The military had essentially given up the search, but Rhodey kept pushing for them to keep looking. He had gone so far as to flying back to Afghanistan himself to personally assist in the search. Every day Bella would wake up, hoping, praying for any kind of news, good or bad, but it never came.

Pepper gave up on trying to make her go to grief counseling after Bella had walked out on the first session. Instead, Bella tried to focus on her tutoring. Her normal tutoring had ended for the summer, but she was trying to learn Italian. So, she had an Italian teacher to give her lessons during the summer. She was getting quite good. But learning it was relatively easy because she already spoke Spanish and French fluently.

It was a warm July day and Bella had just finished eating her lunch when she got a phone call from Pepper who was working at her office. "What's up Pepper?" she asked, swallowing her last bite of food.

"They found him!" Pepper said in a rush, her voice full of emotion.

"W-what?" Bella stuttered, trying to make sense of the situation. "Do you mean they found dad?"

"Yes! I just got the call. I'll come and pick you up right now and then we can drive over to the base. His plane will be getting in soon." She explained the situation.

A million questions raced through Bella's head. "Is he hurt? Where was he all this time? How come they just found him now?" she asked hurriedly.

"I don't know. Rhodey didn't give me a lot of details."

"Okay, come over fast."

Twenty minutes later Happy and Pepper picked her up and they drove to the military base just in time for Tony's plane to touch down. It was a huge military jet that was so loud Bella had to cover her ears while it was landing. An ambulance was parked nearby, ready to take her father to the hospital if needed. All around them the place was abuzz with military personnel.

Pepper had tears in her eyes, clearly extremely emotional about the whole thing. Bella just stood there stone faced, not knowing exactly how to feel. Yes, she was glad her father was coming home, but would things be any different or would they carry on in their normal routine, being cold and distant from one another. Happy stood behind them in his black suit and dark sunglasses, observing the situation.
