Undisclosed Location June 7th, 2011
A few days after the Stark Expo battle, Tony and Bella sat in a warehouse filled with SHIELD agents. Around them were various screens and monitors with coverage of the attack or reports on Tony Stark. One read 'STARK EXPO ATTACK DEATH TOLL RISES TO 100, OVER 200 PEOPLE STILL MISSING'. Bella sighed and leaned back in her chair. After everything that had happened in Monaco and the infamous birthday party, the media had been surprisingly kind. They painted Iron Man once again as the fearless hero and the public adored him now more than ever.
On a table in front of them was a file which read, 'AVENGER INITIATIVE PREMLIMIARY REPORT'. Tony picked it up and was about to thumb through it when Nick Fury appeared. He took the file from him and set it back down on the table.
"I don't think I want you looking at that. I'm not sure it pertains to you anymore." He glanced over at Bella, "She's not supposed to be here. This is a confidential meeting."
"No her, no me." Tony responded stoically.
Fury's one eye traveled between Tony, onto Bella and then down at the file he was holding. "Now this is Agent Romanoff's assessment of you. Read it." He handed Tony the file.
"'Personality overview: Mr. Stark displays compulsive behavior.' In my own defense, that was last week." Bella rolled her eyes, "'Prone to self-destructive tendencies.' I was dying. I mean, please. Aren't we all? 'Textbook narcissism'?" He looked back up at Fury, "Agreed. Okay, here it is. 'Recruitment assessment for Avenger Initiative: Iron Man, yes.' I gotta think about it." He placed back down the file and looked up at Fury.
"Read on." Was all the director responded with.
"'Tony Stark not...'" He trailed off, "'Not recommended'? That doesn't make any sense. How can you approve me but not approve me? I got a new ticker. I'm trying to do right by Bella," He looked down at his daughter, "By Pepper. I'm in a stable-ish relationship."
"Which leads us to believe at this juncture we'd only like to use you as a consultant." Fury explains.
"Oh, that's cold." Bella shook her head with a small smile.
Tony side eyed her before standing up and shaking Fury's hand. "You can't afford me." He wrapped his arm around Bella and turned to leave, "Then again, I will waive my customary retainer in exchange for a small favor. Rhodey and I are being honored in Washington and we need a presenter."
"I'll see what I can do."

Gosh this story is really drawing close to the end now! The next few chapters are going to be about this length. Sorry that they're so short!
