swinging by my neck from the family tree

than leave me hanging so they can all laugh at me

Bella yawned and took a large bite out of a sprinkled doughnut. They had spent the night in a nearby Motel 6, but Bella hadn't gotten any sleep. She still had on her red dress, now torn and dirty. Hours-old make-up was on her face, and she clutched her heels in her free hand.

They had gotten up at the crack of dawn to buy doughnuts. Tony hadn't taken off his suit but had replaced the helmet with a pair of sunglasses, clearly hung over. Together, they sat in the hole of a giant doughnut on top of a doughnut shop. If everything was going to shit, at least they still had doughnuts.

"I'm gonna have to ask you two to exit the doughnut." Spoke a voice from below them.

Bella looked down to see the all too familiar face of Nick Fury looking back. He was dressed in all black, complete with a knee-length leather jacket and eyepatch. Despite the hot California heat, he still looked like something out of the Matrix. Tony looked over the edge of his glasses with an annoyed expression. Without another word, he set aside the box of doughnuts, picked up Bella, and flew down to the ground.

"If it isn't CIA, FBI, NSA secret, special agent Nick Fury." Tony spoke sarcastically. "I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to see a badge."

Fury looked unamused. "Follow me." He spoke sternly and led them into the doughnut shop. "Sit." He gestured towards a nearby booth.

"So, what do you want with me?" Tony questioned.

Fury didn't say anything at first, instead he just looked at the two of them. Finally, he spoke. "Coffee?" He pushed forward two paper to-go cups towards them.

"Thanks." Tony mumbled and took a sip.

"Have you given any more thought to my proposal?" Fury asked, referring to their conversation about the Avengers Initiative almost a year earlier.

"I told you I don't want to join your super-secret boy band." Tony rubbed his temples, nursing a headache.

"No, no, no. See, I remember, you do everything yourself. How's that working out for you?" Fury questioned, smiling.

"It's... it's... it's..." Tony mumbled. "I'm sorry. I don't want to get off on the wrong foot. Do I look at the patch or the eye? Honestly, I'm a big hung over."
