Present Day
Character POV: Roxanne
Ariadne just raises her voice and calls to her own people, "We've sent a message to Drusilla, demanding that she meet us at a nearby state park in the dead of night. It should be relatively empty at that time, and Roxanne. . ."
"Aoibhe," I interject, done with hiding and pretending to be someone else than the person I am. Her brows rise in surprise, but her eyes light up with pleasure. That's the name she knows me by, the name I went by when she saved me from the pyre. I didn't start using a fake name until I started hiding from myself and the world. She seems to get the symbolism, and swiftly picks up my old name.
"Aoibhe will put up a magical shield so that no one will be able to see in. Humans should not be a problem. They believe us all to be myth anymore." She laughs, and a chuckle runs through the rest of the vampires that is contageous enough that I even smirk. She rushes on, thrusting her arms out in a wide gesture and says, "Tomorrow, I am going to face down Drusilla. Who is with me, no matter the cost?"
The words "no matter the cost" hit me so hard that, for a second, I cannot breathe. So much has gone wrong throughout my life that I expect more tragedy at every turn. I hear the other vampires chant back, "No matter the cost!" and I try and tell myself that, just because things have been shit in the past, that doesn't mean that history will repeat itself in this situation. Even so, I start thinking of contingency plans, just in case the world decides to spit on me again and laugh in my face. I will not crumble again. I will not fail these people.
