As I raced out of the school grounds, my heart hammering in my chest as I pushed myself to go faster, faster.
I finally broke free from the suffocating confines of the school, I slowed to a stop, my chest heaving as I gulped in ragged breaths of cool evening air. The gentle breeze tousled my hair, and I couldn't help but tremble as the adrenaline coursing through my veins began to ebb.
Glancing nervously over my shoulder, I found the road deserted. With a shaky exhale, I wiped the cold sweat from my brow,
Without hesitation, I set off in the direction of familiar streets,
My mother's scolding words echoed in my ears as I trudged through the familiar corridors of home. Ignoring her reproach, I brushed off her concerns with a casual lie, I told her I was at the library studying. I don't even know how much of that was true. Surprisingly, she seemed to buy it, and I breathed a sigh of relief as she let the matter drop.
Now, as nightfall draped the world in a shroud of darkness, I found myself alone in the quiet sanctuary of my room. Outside my window, I could hear nature's nighttime concert – the katydids, crickets, and cicadas all joining in. Their calming songs made me feel peaceful, like everything was okay, and I could relax.
With a weary sigh, I sank into the soft embrace of my bed, my eyes fixed on the ceiling above.
Suddenly a loud knock on my bedroom window woke me up from a deep sleep, breaking the quiet of the night.
I was startled awake and sat up quickly in bed. I looked at the window where the moonlight was shining through, making weird shadows on the white curtains.
Shaking, I slowly got out of bed. My feet made quiet sounds on the floor as I walked towards the noise.
As I got closer to the window, I stopped for a second, feeling my heart beat faster. Taking a deep breath, I grabbed the curtain and pulled it back slowly, showing what was outside.
A gasp escaped my lips and my hand flew instinctively to cover my mouth in disbelief. "Kaylo?"
I dithered for a moment before I reached out to unlatch the window, the metallic click echoing softly in the stillness of the room as he climbed inside and closed the window behind him,
I looked at him with furrowed brows, and his eyes remained focused on me, almost as if he couldn't look away from my face.
"Decided to drop your bag since you left it in the library," he muttered, his voice low and steady as he closed the distance between us, his gaze penetrating mine with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.
My mouth opened as I remembered why I had left my bag behind, feeling a wave of panic wash over me.
Before I could grab it, Kaylo quickly dropped the bag to the ground. Then, suddenly, he pushed me against the wall, making my back hit hard, and I groaned in pain.
