Preface
Immediately after the wars, which had effectively pulled the United States out of its longstanding isolation, a global ideological divide began to take shape. Democratic nations in the West deepened their economic and diplomatic ties, while communist nations in the East, such as the Soviet Union, distanced and isolated themselves. As my own Winston Churchill put it, an "iron curtain" descended across the continent of Europe, one that would likely change the course of history. All the while, the new threat of nuclear weapons made world peace seem more elusive than ever before.
Coincidentally, the golden years of the United States, the Pax Americana, were just beginning to dawn.
