Preface

The United States became a Great Power during the Industrial Revolution. This boom of technology and innovation paved the way for massive economic growth on a global scale—poverty decreased, cities grew, and militaries expanded in destructive capability. European Powers continued to engage in fierce competition at home and clash with one another in their colonies abroad. The United States continued to assert its Monroe Doctrine, by which it maintained its ideological independence from Europe as well as its economic control over South America.

Europe itself was becoming a tightly packed powder keg, waiting for someone to light the fuse.
