The man watched, just as he did every morning, as the Sun left the shadows. Not the Sun that lights the sky, but the Sun that lived in Apartment 5B. He smiled as he walked alongside him, greeting everyone along the way. Everyone knew him, and he knew everyone else.

No one ever really noticed him. Not unless he wanted to be noticed.

Sunoo was also a creature of habit. He started every day grabbing a to-go vanilla cold brew from the mom-and-pop coffee shop two blocks from his apartment.

The Jung's expected him every day except the weekend, and they already had a cup ready for him when he arrived.  He appreciated that, because it meant that he could take a few minutes to check in on them and ask how they were doing.  They had been sad since their son left for college, and some days Sunoo felt like a son to them. Every day his bright smile made missing their son just a little more bearable.

Heading into the bakery if it was Monday through Wednesday, Sunoo typically arrived about 30 minutes before his business partner. The bakery was very successful thanks to the highly acclaimed cakes, pastries, and all things dessert – even his homemade ice cream.  He was a dessert genius by all accounts, and his catering services were in high demand.

But if you wanted to get something in real time, Monday through Wednesday was the only day to get it. The business partners had only recently opened up the storefront, Sunoo secretly hoping that it could be full time. He loved catering, but desserts were his passion.

Even so, he didn't mind that it was only open three days of the week. The rest of the week was filled up with other responsibilities and activities. Besides, it's not like all he did was bake.

The man usually met up with Sunoo when they were at TeenHeal if it was Thursday, where many volunteered. Sunoo loved it there as did all of the volunteers and the man was no exception. Sunoo was so great with the teens, and he knew how much it meant to them to have a safe space like that. He always wished there had been a space like that for him when he was growing up.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday it was highly likely that Sunoo and his business partner were catering an event. Most recently, they had catered a huge event for TeenHeal and everyone was still talking about. Not just the food, but the atmosphere. It wasn't even Sunoo's party, but he lit up the room.

Everyone in Seoul knew Kim Sunoo.  Everyone in Seoul loved Kim Sunoo. And Kim Sunoo was as busy as a person could get. But the man didn't mind.

He knew that Sunoo appreciated that he was able to keep up with his busy schedule. He knew that it meant the world to him that he was able to support him in that way.  Sunoo had a lot of supporters, but they both knew that he was the most important.

......

Then, one horrible, rainy, dreadful morning, the door to Apartment 5B never opened.  Maybe Sunoo was sick?  It had never occurred to him that a Happy Pill was capable of illness, but everyone is. He's only human after all. Even if ethereal.

As the time to arrive at the coffee shop came and went, the man was unsure if he should check Apartment 5B. Maybe he'd missed him.

Sunoo was a creature of habit, and it didn't dawn on the man that he may have left for work early. He wondered if he had missed Sunoo mention that he would be going to work earlier than usual that day. He would try and meet him at the coffee shop. That's all it was. He was getting an early start.

But when he got to the coffee shop, there was no Sunoo.

It IS raining, thought the man, and as it was Tuesday, it would stand to reason that he would take a cab instead of walking to the bakery. He didn't usually go with him to the bakery after coffee, but seeing as it was time for it to open, he decided to head that direction.

Once he arrived, he couldn't seem to locate a key, so he waited outside and hoped that he would come soon to let him in.  The storefront had an awning, but the wind blew the rain toward him anyway.

But even though he waited, there was no Sunoo.

With a sigh, and a horrible feeling deep down in his gut, the man took a deep breath and prepared to start searching for him.

He knew that if anyone could find him, he would be the one. Everything would be fine. He knew there was no need to worry too much.

He could already see his face beaming at him, so happy to see him when he finally found him. Such relief knowing that he's always there for him.  Always has been and always will be.

Wherever Sunoo is, he is certain that the man will come; the man is sure of it.

....

Just like we planned.
