Rescue...?

Sunoo was asleep, and the man was not.

It was the early hours of the morning, and the costume was on. Not the mask, just the costume.

He had gone back and forth on whether to go back in.  He'd said he would never go back.  He shouldn't be here.  He shouldn't have to wear this mask.

He should have found another way.

I wish I'd just gotten the chance to find another way.

A tear ran down his cheek as he looked at Sunoo.  He thought about telling him the truth, but he didn't think it would matter.  In fact, it would make things worse.

What would Sunoo do when he found out that a man in a mask was someone he already knew?

It's easy...he'll never find out. This was done.

The man had decided to opt out. He wasn't doing this anymore. The consequences would be what they were, but someone else would have to handle it.

He took the costume off and laid it down ceremoniously on the desk. A gesture of surrender.

With a last look at the monitor, he let the tears fall.

"I'm sorry, Sunoo." he told the restful sleeper through the monitor.

And as he picked up his keys, he heard it.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Someone was banging on something.  THE DOOR??!?!?!?

He went to the monitors and flicked the screen to the outside cameras.

His heart sank to his feet as he heard the banging again.  He turned the monitor back to the inside cameras and saw Sunoo, sitting up in his bed, face unbelieving.

When he switched the camera back to the outside, he saw Nishimura Riki.  His face was up to the camera.

"JAY!!!" The detective yelled into the camera, "OPEN THIS DOOR!!!  WE KNOW YOU'RE HERE, AND WE KNOW YOU HAVE SUNOO!!!"

The man rolled his eyes. This is ridiculous.

He looked at the clock and laughed. 7:30am.

He knew what was up. And he knew he was screwed. What he wanted to know was why.  It shouldn't be a crime to love someone and want them to be okay. Besides, he'd done the best he could.

I mean, technically it isn't a crime.  But the way I've done it...

He heard the loud, methodical sound of someone trying to break the door down.

He didn't bother switching the camera back to the outside.  They'd be here eventually.

He watched Sunoo, who was looking around wildly at the noise. The man leaned forward in his chair and grabbed the microphone, turning it on to be heard through the loudspeaker.

"It's okay Sun - dammit."

The man saw Sunoo looking around, confused. He switched the voice distortion on the microphone off.

"It's okay, Sunoo," the voice said. Sunoo looked at the door in shock. He knew this voice...

"I will never be able to tell you the truth. I will never be able to even try to explain to you why I did this.  I really hope that someday, somehow, you figure it out on your own..."

Sunoo's jaw dropped. He could hear the door being slammed in the background, but it sounded so far away. The voice sounded like...but he couldn't be sure...
