Clover Hemmings sat on the guest bed the next day with her phone in hand and her legs crossed up to her hips. She stared at her phone intensely.
Gavin had been texting her but she hadn't been responding. He was accusing her of everything under the sun.
"You're cheating on me, aren't you?" He'd said. "It's probably with the douchebag neighbor you've been speaking to. Answer me now."
She bit her nails harshly. The next day was the intended day of her leaving Los Angeles and going home, and she knew that since Luke knew about what was going on— there was no way she was going home in a relationship.
Hey, sorry I haven't been responding. She typed. "What are you going to even say, Clover?" She asked herself. "Hey! My brother knows you hit me, so we're over? He's gonna fucking kill me if I say that, literally."
Unfortunately, Clover knew what Gavin would do if she broke things off. He'd spread rumors like wildfire.
Gavin, we need to talk. She typed after deleting her previous text. She immediately shook her head and deleted it. Clover threw her phone to the side, sighed, and fell back onto her bed.
Clover had the mindset that she was nothing without Gavin. That she would be alone for the rest of her life, without a reason to keep going. Her motto— I am nothing without him— rested in her mind everyday.
"Hey Clo— Oh, what's going on?"
Clover looked up at Luke, who examined her state.
"Hi, Luke." Clover whispered, sitting back up and hugging her knee. "What's wrong?"
Luke sat down next to her. "I should be asking you that." He chuckled.
Clover smiled softly. "Just trying to decide what to text Gavin." She told him. Luke's eyes softened and he pulled Clover into a side hug.
"Do you want some help?" Luke asked.
"I just don't know how to tell him I wanna end things. I don't know how I'm gonna go back to Australia with him in the same area as me," Clover explained with her hands. "And he knows I've read it by now."
Luke rubbed her shoulder gently. "Well..." He exhaled. "What if you stayed in America until it died down?"
Clover looked at Luke with her eyebrows knitted together. "With you?"
"Yeah. Mom would go home, and you stay for a little. As long as you'd like." Luke suggested.
Clover looked down at the hardwood floor and blinked a couple times. Stay with Luke? She thought. Not bad. But could I leave mom alone?
She then reminded herself that she wouldn't be alone. Her mom would be with Ben and Jack, and her father. She just wasn't sure if she could leave her home. She had packed so little. "I-I don't know. I don't wanna leave mom, and I packed so little."
Luke stood up gently. "How about you think about it? Go outside, watch the sunset, talk to Griffin and Blake. You don't have to decide now."
Clover nodded. "Okay."
"I love you, Lucky." Luke kissed Clover's head and smiled.
"I love you too, Luke." Clover smiled back.
After Luke left, Clover put on sweatpants and a t-shirt and walked outside with a hydro flask and some embroidery string to make bracelets with and sat down on the beach.
Blake was outside when Clover came outside and waved to her, she waved back and sat down.
After two bracelets were done, Blake hopped the fence with his own book and sat down next to Clover. "Hey Clo! What are ya up to?"
Clover scooted over so Blake could have room and smiled. "Making bracelets. Would you like one?"
"Is that even a question?" Blake gasped. "Yes I would love one!"
Clover giggled. "Choose 3 colors."
Blake went ahead and chose navy blue, white, and orange— which he babbled about were his favorite colors.
Clover made a chevron patterned bracelet for the brown haired boy next to her and put it on for him, along with his other friendship bracelets he had accumulated.
"I love it. Something' to remember you by, ya know?" Blake smiled. "I'm sad. You're leaving tomorrow and we'd hardly begun to know each other!"
Clover smiled sadly. "I know." she said, "Luke mentioned me staying for a little bit longer, but I don't know. I have a boyfriend back home, you know?"
"I forgot you had a boyfriend," Blake faced Clover. "When you mention him, I can tell Griffin gets a bit jealous."
Clover's cheeks heated. "No he doesn't!"
"Totally does, darling." Blake chuckled. "But anywho, tell me about Gavin."
Clover didn't really want to talk about Gavin. She wanted to tell Blake about what had happened recently, and what was happening. But she'd known him for almost two weeks, it was odd.
"He's..." Clover started, looking down at her sweats. "A character."
Blake nodded slowly. "Right..."
"He's kind of mean." Clover blurted out, causing Blake's eyebrows to go together.
"He's mean to you?" He asked, sounding concerned. "Clover is everything okay?"
Clover swallowed. "He's just." She looked up at Blake, and she noticed a lace of concern in his eyes. "Let's just say there is a lot I haven't told you?"
Before Blake could be concerned more, Griffin hopped the fence and came over. "Hello Backyard Princess!" He sat down next to Blake, "And my brother."
"Hi Griffin," Clover smiled. "Sorry, you two, but I should go inside. It's late and I hate mosquitoes."
"I'll text you," Blake mouthed to Clover. She waved to the two and ran inside, closing the door behind her.
When Clover went inside with her things, she saw Liz and Luke talking behind the counter. Liz had a very concerned look on her face and Luke looked at Clover sympathetically.
"I think we should talk about you and Gavin, Clover."
