Chapter Seven

(y/n)’s POV:

It was 6:10 when we finished up the tour. He showed me every room save for the back hall leading to Parts and Service, which smelled richly of iron and mould beneath a strong chemical overlay. Curious as it was, I chose not to press him for the reasoning. We stepped out into the molten-painted evening through the back doors which led to the employee car park. The sky was brilliantly adorned in rich values of orange, red, and magenta as the sun set. I stopped for a moment to take it all in, looking up at the sky. As I did so, I could feel those cold eyes on me, “Don’t you think you have a staring problem, Mr. Afton?”

“I wouldn’t call it a staring problem. It’s rather a…,” he paused to think for the right word, “an analysing problem.”

“I’d suggest you keep your eyes from venturing then,” I turned to meet his eyes sharply, watching as his pupils dilated at the sudden contact before he abruptly turned his head and began walking to his car. I followed behind his lanky form and split to get into my own car, popping a cassette in the slot and pushing it in before pulling out of the car park to lead the way home.

I flipped through the mail as we walked into the kitchen from the garage. William immediately got a greeting by wagging tails and licking from the two hounds. Most of the mail was useless to me or from the college. One in particular, though, caught my eye. It was a cold-pressed envelope bearing the Vigouroux wax seal on the wine-red stationary. I immediately knew it was either from Ilonna or our parents. Quickly, it was opened and scanned over. It was a letter from father:

“ Dearest (y/n),

I write to you in hopes that this letter finds you in good health, I know this last week has been quite stressful. You know we’re all proud of you and how far you’ve come in these last few years, but I wanted to make sure you knew how much we truly love you. Enclosed, you will find enough money for you to afford anything you like, as well as need, over in the states. Take it, also, as a celebration gift for your first time out on your own. I’m tearing up right now as I write at the thought of such a strong young man you’ve grown to be, from clinging to my side as a pup to forging your own path in foreign lands. You make the Vigouroux name proud every day, my son.

Enough of that, though. I know how much you love your animals, so I’ve arranged for a surprise to be brought to you in the states. It should arrive in roughly a week following this letter. If you should need anything, anything at all!, let us know and you’ll have it. You deserve it.

Take care, (y/n).

With love and kisses from us all,

Mum, Dad, and Ilonna”

A small smile settled on my lips as I read. I set the letter on the counter and pulled the smaller note from in the envelope, it was a slip enclosing a money clip with the entailed American money father sent me. I promptly put it in my wallet after thumbing through it. “What was that?” a deep voice from behind me snagged my attention. Turning, I faced William.

“Just a letter, personal business,” I stated as I opened the lid of a simmer pot sitting on the stove, stirring the inside and wafting the house in the rich scent of rabbit and vegetables.

“Fine then, keep your secrets,” amusement laced his tone, “What are we having for supper?” He leaned over my shoulder, watching me spoon the meal into two bowls.

“Rabbit au vin,” I spoke this name with the French accent of my deceased mother before returning to English, “Or, a rich French stew with shallots, carrots, bacon, and mushrooms in a red wine sauce.”

“Ooo, sounds fancy, smells delicious,” William’s eyes followed me as I pulled two wine glasses from their hooks and a bottle from the rack beside the refrigerator. I poured two glasses of the semi-sweet red before placing the bottle back and facing the taller man, offering him a glass and a bowl.
