A/N: And here it is, the final Chapter!
Every time Merlin whimpered in his unconsciousness Arthur pressed tender kisses to Merlin's skin, to his brow, temple, cheek, collarbone, shoulder, stomach... Every time he let out a sob or tossed in his restless sleep Arthur whispered loving words into his ear and stroked his hair until he settled. Arthur didn't—refused to move his hand away where it was resting over Merlin's belly, only moving to kiss the small bump and to whisper to it too, endeavouring to convince and remind Merlin's body to hold onto the tiny life that was growing there.
-
Merlin's temperature had gone back to normal, and he was now in a peaceful sleep rather than being unconsciousness and looking to have been living through nightmares. Arthur never left his side, he growled at anyone who tried to make him, even at Gwen.
He'd been informed by Leon that his act of saving Merlin and his words had managed to make Uther see past the enchantment he was under. As soon as he realised what had happened to him and remembered how it had happened, Lady Catrina and Jonas had been arrested and were awaiting a trial. Arthur had yet to see his father, Gaius had been between him and Merlin since yesterday morning, told him he was healthy and thinking clearly again. That's what worried Arthur. Uther had remembered everything while he'd been spelled, so he would have remembered the accusations of Merlin being a sorcerer. That terrified Arthur. Especially after the recent events with Lady Catrina and the use of dark magic.
"Merlin is strong and stubborn," Gaius said bring Arthur back to the present, "He won't relent that easily and neither will his babe, his magic is helping him heal and had help keep your child safe," he said, laying a comforting hand on Arthur's shoulder.
Arthur nodded in response; not trusting his voice at the moment, and went back to watching over his sleeping mate, fearing what future they might have.
-
He was yet to move from his seat by Merlin. His mate had woken up a few times during the night and the morning after, Arthur had managed to get him to drink some water and broth but other than that he'd mostly stayed asleep. Gaius advised it best for both mother and child, giving Merlin sleeping draughts to help him with the restlessness he felt when he was awake and itched to get up and move about. Another day's bedrest and then he was clear and free to go back to his usual day to day.
Now that his relationship with Arthur was out and he was revealed to be carrying Arthur's heir his day to day might change now.
-
Three days after the incident that nearly took Merlin and his child away from him Arthur saw his father. The king had come to Arthur's chambers and personally asked after Merlin. Arthur was distant with him. Even though he knew his father had been under an enchantment it didn't make the events of the last few days hurt any less. And he feared what his father might do now. That was until later into their conversation at Merlin's bedside.
"Arthur," he said earnestly, placing his hand on Arthur's shoulder and squeezing, "I hope you know it was all Catrina's influence," he did know, but also knew it was half a lie. He'd been spelled but it was him who sentenced Merlin to death. Under his own volution. All Lady Catrina did was accuse Merlin. He wondered if he could ever forgive his father for that. He looked up at his father to show he was listening, his hand tightened around Merlin's.
"I admit," he continued, his voice tuning more serious, it made Arthur's stomach drop, "I'm not very pleased by your choice of a mate," he said slowly, gravely, choosing his words carefully, Arthur turned his gaze away from him, edging closer to merlin instinctively, "But I'd never let you suffer the same fate as mine."
Arthur would admit he had his worries for Merlin when they found out he was pregnant, considering his own birth and his mother's passing. But Gaius and Merlin had reassured him nothing alike would happen to Merlin. Their babe would be born from love, and not through magic. Certainly not magic that required a sacrifice.
He couldn't take not knowing anymore, the fear was eating up at him from the inside. He knew he would be treading on very thin ice by asking the question of the tip of his tongue, but he had to take the plunge. He needed to know.
"Even if he truly was a sorcerer?" he asked in a small voice his father would have reprimanded him for when he was younger. But when it came to Merlin, his allowed himself to show his weak points.
The room was eerily quiet for a heartbeat or two before Uther replied.
"Even then," Uther said after a moment of hesitation. He didn't seem thrilled with the idea, but Arthur believed him and that's all he wanted.
