Chapter 2
JJ
1 week later
Poguelandia.
I could really get used to this.
We've decided to divide and conquer when it comes to surviving together on the island. The first thing Pope did was go off and find fresh water since the only other thing we could do was boil the salt out of the ocean water, but we can't really do that without something to boil the water in.
Kie and Cleo were in charge of scouring the jungle for edible berries and leaves since they knew the most about plants and shit. Sarah went around and found all the coconuts she could find because apparently "coconuts are really healthy and a good source of protein" according to Pope.
John B and I? We're fishing.
We found sticks and tied sharp seashells to the ends with some rope we made out of leaves and thin, bendy branches. Like the pros we are, we wade around in shallow water while we wait for fish to swim up and stab them. I try and make sure Kie doesn't see the dead fish since she gets kinda freaked by it, but I know she'll get used to it eventually. She'll have to.
And we're making it work. Really well if I do say so myself.
We haven't done much to our little area yet, but we have a lot of plans. We built a little canopy to get better coverage than just some trees, and we also constructed a designated area for our fire at night to cook our meat on. Our main site is inside a natural alcove formed from the rocks surrounding us, but it doesn't keep out the rain very well. We also have a couple of hang lines that we use to hang wet clothes and some food.
We've turned old coconut shells into bowls and cups that we use for water and berries. Sarah and Cleo made a little table for us out of a huge plank of wood, and we've been gathering so many fucking leaves it's crazy. The bigger the better, because sometimes sitting on the leaves is so much better than the sand. The sand gets into places that no one wants sand to get into and then we gotta go wash it off again. It gets annoying as hell.
"Holy shit!" I yell, stabbing and killing a fish that is at least 15 pounds. "We're grubbing tonight!"
John B laughs. "Woohoo!" He cheers, slapping me on the back.
We wait around a bit longer for some more fish, but none show up so we head back to our little campsite.
"Look at this beauty!" I announce to the group.
Everyone cheers and Cleo takes the fish from me to prepare it to eat later.
Kie grimaces at me. I sit down next to her, out of breath a little. "What? Don't want to eat tonight?"
She smiles a little, looking down and shaking her head. "Those poor fish." She responds, and I can tell by the look in her eyes that she's joking with me.
I laugh, nudging her shoulder with mine.
"How did the hunt go today?" John B asks, sitting down next to me and handing me some water to drink.
Sarah and Kiara sigh. "Not that good," Sarah replies, sitting down between John B's legs. I look down and start playing with the sand when John B wraps his arms around her.
It's not that I don't love them, I do. I love them both so much it hurts. They're my family. But sometimes it gets to a point where I'm also so jealous of them that it hurts. Not jealous of John B, no. I'm not lusting after his "wife". I think they're married? I'm honestly not even entirely sure how that even happened in the first place. But I'm jealous of what they have. They found the one. The person they are most likely going to be spending the rest of their lives with.
