Chapter 8

Kiara

"How's yours looking?" JJ asks me.

After we hung up his flag, we grabbed two thin branches and some thin leaves to secure sharp shells to the ends of the branches to make into spears.

The whole time we've been making our spears I was thinking about the conversation JJ and I had while he was drawing his flag.

I get why he thinks it was weird, it was weird for me, too, but when he pulled away from our almost-kiss again, it confirmed something I think I already knew deep down.

I have feelings for him.

It hurt when he pulled away, but it's too new. I get it. I don't know how he feels about me, I doubt he has feelings for me anyway, but it still hurts. And it just solidified my feelings for him.

But I'm not going to act on any of my feelings until he makes a move - if he'll ever. Our friendship came first, and I cherish our friendship more than anything. I don't want to do anything to ruin it, or potentially ruin our friendships with everyone else.

I hold up my finished spear to show JJ.

"Ready to provide for the family?" He asks.

"Yep," I reply, a smile on my face.

We stand up and start walking to the shallow area where John B and JJ usually go to fish. The waves don't produce strongly, so seeing and catching fish is easier.

"Let's go kill something," he says, smirking at me.

"You don't have to say it like that," I reply, grimacing.

"Yeah, well, it's exactly what we're going to do."

"Sounds so...barbaric."

"Well, that's the circle of life, Kie. Unless you wanna eat coconuts forever."

I let out a chuckle. "After the past month, I think I'm good on coconuts."

When we reach the spot, JJ removes his shirt and uses it as a handle for his spear.

And I'm totally checking him out.

His body is tanned and peeling from being in the sun all day, every day, and he's definitely gotten a lot slimmer surviving off of coconuts, berries, and fish. But it's a hot day today, and his sweat is making his chest glisten, and it's hard to look away.

I clear my throat and look away before he catches me.

We slowly enter the water, and I get my spear ready while I look around for fish.

"Remember," JJ starts. "Watch the shadow. They see that, they're gone."

"Right," I mumble.

"Alright, here we go."

I look over to watch him watch the water.

He catches me looking this time, but he just smiles and nods at me. My heart flutters in my chest, but I do the same back before looking down at the water again.

This might be the death of me.

A few minutes go by, and no fish, but then JJ starts saying my name.

"Hey, Kie. Kie, Kie, Kie. Kie, it's a skate. It's a skate right there, you see him?"

I look in the direction JJ is pointing, and I see the smaller fish he's talking about. It looks like a baby stingray.

"All right. It's all me," I respond, getting ready to spear the fish.

"It's over by you!" JJ exclaims. "It's coming towards you! Kie, this is the time."
