The next morning, Dani strolled along, enjoying the sunshine and taking in the bright colors of all the produce arranged in baskets around her. Her and Eddie had actually risen early and drove into a little town called Kirkwood. It was a twenty minute drive from St. Louis and Dani had seen a flyer at Union Station about a farmer's market they had. She'd wanted to head there and check it out and Eddie had been more than happy to oblige her.
"For my lady," Eddie whispered as he came up next to her, producing a bunch of daisies in his hand.
"Aww. Where did you get these?" Dani asked, beaming as she took them from him, leaning her head down to inhale their fresh scent.
"There's a lady selling flowers back there. I couldn't resist," he said, planting a kiss on her cheek.
"Thank you. You're the sweetest," she said. "You know, there's a lady here selling all different kinds of bread."
"Bread?" he asked, his eyes lighting up. "My favorite of the food groups."
"I know," Dani giggled. "Why don't you go find us some good bread to make sandwiches with for our bike ride later?"
"Say no more," Eddie exclaimed, raising his finger in the air. "I am on it."
As he headed off on his mission, she stepped up to a small table, picking up a pint of strawberries and a woman approached. She was maybe five years older than Dani, wearing overalls, a bandana wrapped around her dark blond hair. She gave Dani a grin.
"Good morning," she said, her voice very chipper and friendly for so early in the day as she pointed to the berries in her hand. "You won't find any better produce here. Our strawberries are the sweetest. The secret is adding potassium to the soil and having a good drainage system."
"Oh, really?" Dani mused, having no idea what she was talking about. She'd never grown anything in her life. Her mom had decided one year that they were going to grow their own fruits and vegetables and it had failed spectacularly. She'd never tried again.
"Mommy!" came a tiny voice and a little girl came running up, wrapping her arms around the woman's legs. "I want a cimanim woll!"
Dani laughed as the woman swooped down, lifting the girl into her arms. She gently booped her nose and turned to Dani with a smile.
"Sorry," she sighed. "My husband usually watches her while I work our table."
A man, who Dani assumed must be the husband, came running up, out of breath, "Sorry babe. She got away from me."
"So I noticed," she teased with a smile. "Sweetie, mommy has to work right now, okay? We'll get you a cinnamon roll in just a little bit."
"Did I hear someone say cinnamon rolls?" Eddie asked, approaching with a small bag hanging off his wrist and winding an arm around Dani's waist. "Where are cinnamon rolls?"
