"Bulstrode, Millicent," was the first to be sorted into Slytherin.
"Justin Finch-Fletchley!" "Hufflepuff!"
Jade noticed that the hat would sometimes immediately call out a house, while at other times, it took longer to decide.
"Finnigan, Seamus," the sandy-haired boy next to Harry in line took a seat on the stool, waiting for almost a minute before the Sorting Hat announced him as a Gryffindor. She realized that the Hat was assessing each student's character and potential, a task that was both fascinating and intimidating.
"Granger, Hermione!" Hermione dashed to the stool, eagerly placing the hat atop her head. "Gryffindor!" the hat exclaimed. Ron let out a groan.
Lost in her thoughts, Jade was left wondering when it would be her turn to be called. She understood that Granger was the last name in alphabetical order, starting with a 'G,' which meant she should have been called shortly after Hermione. However, the build-up made her feel anxious, and she couldn't help but think about when her turn would finally come.
As the sorting went on, the next name called was "Neville Longbottom." Much to everyone's surprise, Neville stumbled and fell on his way to the stool. This led to a brief moment of concern, which quickly shifted to laughter at Neville's clumsiness. Even though Jade felt a pang of pity, she couldn't help but chuckle at the sight.
Perched atop Neville's head, the Sorting Hat appeared to take an unusually long time deliberating over which house he should belong to. The students and teachers held their breath in anticipation, eagerly awaiting the Hat's verdict. It appeared to be engaged in a serious internal debate, as if it were struggling to find the perfect match for Neville's unique characteristics.
After what felt like an eternity, the Sorting Hat finally boomed, "GRYFFINDOR!" The Gryffindor table erupted into cheers and applause, welcoming their newest member. Neville's face glowed with pure joy; he sprinted off to be with his new Gryffindor friends while still wearing the Sorting Hat.
Amidst the laughter ringing around him, he had to jog back to pass it to "MacDougal, Morag." "Ravenclaw," the Hat murmured almost immediately.
When Draco's name was called, he swaggered forward with a cocky smirk, and he instantly got what he wanted. The hat barely made contact with his head before it yelled, "SLYTHERIN!" He left to join his friends, Crabbe and Goyle, looking quite pleased with himself.
There weren't many people left, and Jade's frustration grew as she fumed in silence. While everyone else had been called up in alphabetical order by their last names, hers began with a 'G.' So why was she still waiting? Doubts began to invade her thoughts. Had Mr. Malfoy made a blunder? Could it be that she wasn't supposed to be here at all? Her mind raced, and she felt the urge to grab something and dissect it, a nervous habit she'd picked up when she was young. But she had nothing with her, not even a pencil. Lost in her thoughts, Jade found herself lost in speculation.
"Maybe I'm not a witch," she murmured under her breath. "Maybe Mr. Malfoy had the wrong child." The uncertainty gnawed at her, overshadowing her previous excitement.
As the silence lingered, Jade's attention was abruptly drawn to a name she recognized: "Harry Potter." The whispers surrounded him as everyone turned their heads.
