The Man Who Found Death

About two weeks passed until the discussion I so avoided for so many years eventually came to be, for I was the one fooled. Me thinking I maintained my cover... Yet this man saw right through me, almost from the beginning. At that point, it felt like he was the one who did me a favour, keeping himself alive for so many more years... to ease my loneliness... This human's capacity and intellect surprised even me... Truly a great man... I couldn't feel any anger towards him, for his words spoke genuinely at the time, reading me like an open book. He was ready to die, yet he kept me companionship... For those years before... They say gods do not feel, but I admit, he is the one person I never wanted to collect, at least up to that point.

We had found ourselves sitting in his parlour, just discussing the latest ways of the world. All of a sudden, an awkward silence fills the air. The man lounges back on his chair, gently tapping the cane on the floor, a look of resolve upon his face. He faces me, breaking the silence.

"Sam... I think this is enough... I am content with everything... So... How does this go then?"

"... what are you talking about?" I asked, feigning denial, but the truth was that I knew what he was referring to.

"Don't do me like that, son. We've known each other for about 4 years now. It's been a pleasure to talk with one such as yourself... One who met so many famous people just before... They left for something else. Believe me, I loved every moment. It's not every day I get to play friends with an immortal such as Death... a god, maybe? But I'm finally content, having achieved everything I ever wanted." he spoke with a tranquil smile.

"Hmff..." I let out a small chuckle. "How long since you've known?" I leaned forward inquisitively, completely erasing my persona.

"Oh, boy. That your name Sam comes from Samael, not Samuel? Or that Thead is an acronym for Death? Or that you should have taken me at the time we met, not 4 years later? I jest, I jest... I knew after my cancer remitted. I was supposed to die around the time that we met. As time went on, I was sure of who you were." he kept his smile and voice steady.

"Why then?" I asked further.

"Why didn't you tell me and let me go on this charade?"

The man looked up towards the sky, then down, facing me, with an expression of endearment.

"You seemed lonely... I was like that once. I hoped to give you some companionship for a while, but then we started talking, and I was getting better, seeing my son again and then wanting for my daughter. It just got sidetracked I guess... But now my body cannot move, despite my will. The effects of nature, I feel them. I am now content with what I did. I think it's time I leave this world for the young ones."

I could not help but feel sadness, which he caught straight away.

"Now, now. Do not feel sad. I am grateful for everything. And I'm also glad."

"Glad?" I inquired, raising an eyebrow.

"Of course. Now that I will go, my daughter will have someone beside her. She's going to be regretful, and you're a decent fellow. Plus I've seen the way you look here. It seems love works even for gods! Hehehe!" he giggled.

A smile came across my face, which had turned slightly red. A strange feeling of relief took me over. I let out a sigh. My previous hesitation just faded away as the man's resolution also strengthened mine.

I raised, and with a snap of the finger, my outfit changed. A dark black robe, opening from the waist down, gave away my silver-on-black Sumerian inscription trousers. My bare feet were feeling the wood grain of the man's floor. My arms and hands, covered in dark Enochian tattoos tightly gripped my skull-headed cane. My hair grew to its original jet-black wild appearance down to my shoulders. My eyes turned pure black as my irises took their silver colour. The ankh-end silver chain completed my visage.

"You're always surprising William. And you're also right. It is time for us to go." I said, holding my hand towards him.

"You look... Majestic..." he said, grabbing my hand and raising it.

"So... how does this work?" William enquired.

I smiled at him, turning him around slowly.

"It's already been done."

Even for one with a mind as open as his, it took a moment. He breathed in and smiled as he saw his body laid back, crane held between his arms, a content smile upon it.

"I thought it would hurt, yet it was so easy."

"It was easy because you are content, William. Normally, people take longer than you to adjust to what they see, including discussions and visions about their lives. But not you, my friend. Your soul is truly at peace, and I've nothing left to show you. Everything that was supposed to be done we did in your last years. You are truly one of a kind, accepting the pass-over so easily. Come now." I finished by guiding William towards the cabin door.

As he slowly took it step by step his figure began to change. The wrinkles dissipated, his back straightened, his hair turned back to gold blonde, and the shine in his eyes came back.

"You are truly a beautiful person..." I let my thought out as I admired his soul's look.

"How? I feel like I'm 30 again..." a small tear raced down his cheek as he took in his appearance.

"Your soul's true look is connected to your point of uppermost happiness or sadness, according to the case. I also believe it's highly connected to where you will find peace, but how that looks is for me to never know. All I see is the white light.

"Ah... I see. I do wonder what it might be." he smiled confidently as he put his hand on the doorknob. As he opened it, a sudden bright light filled the whole house.

"It's so warm... It's... It's amazing..." he took a moment of pause to acknowledge what was happening.

"Well... My friend, I have one last request of you... Samael... Sam. Please. Take care of my daughter. She seems stricken with you, and I hope you truly feel the same way. I know it might be just a speck of nothingness to you, but it would be the world for her. And I hope this nothingness will cast your sadness away, even for a bit." he smiled as he walked towards the light.

As the bright shine slowly faded away, I found myself blanking out, staring at the air. Outside the open door, a sound of thunder and the sight of lighting as the world started crying for one of its purest souls that left it. A warm drop of water was dripping from my black-silver eyes as I stood silently for hours, not moving at all... I was sadder than I had ever been in the aeons since I started my work... I felt lonely once more.
