"What's the level of trouble?" Martin asked, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The fact that I was requesting a secure connection meant that the situation was dire, and Martin was well aware of it. It wasn't something I did often. In fact, it had only happened twice before. The first time was when I had encountered a singer and influencer who had secretly traveled to Syria to show support for Syrian women. Coincidentally, I was in that region for an unrelated matter. I stumbled upon her by chance when she was being pursued by men, not for autographs or selfies, but with more sinister intentions. I had fought to help her escape across the border, my vehicle being riddled with bullets in the process. Eventually, we managed to secure transport by helicopter a few kilometers away from the border, heading towards Mosul. From Baghdad, I had called Martin to arrange the discreet repatriation of Miss Liberty.
The second time I called him, I had just been shot by my then-girlfriend, who had officially decided to join the ranks of ISIS. I was requesting permission for some time off so I could track down that treacherous woman and seek revenge. Unofficially, I had walked into my quasi-girlfriend's tent in the middle of the night, seeking solace after returning from a mission. Little did I know that some people don't appreciate nocturnal surprises. A cover story had to be concocted to protect Lindsay from any repercussions, ensuring that the incident would never appear on her record.
"The weapons were intended for The brotherhood of America."
"They had calmed down."
"Time to reorganize."
Good job. For the bikers I'm forwarding them on to the DEA. I'm notifying the FBI and ATF about the militia. About the lieutenant?"
"Oliver and Carmen are looking for him, as soon as they get their hands on him they bring him back to Fort Hood."
"Anything else that requires you to stay put?"
"No. But I will stay two or three days, the time to... clear a situation."
"Well done, Emily."
I take note of the closed shops and the police presence surrounding the MC club. It seems like the authorities have taken swift action in response to the investigation. As I walk through the area, I can't help but feel a mixture of relief and satisfaction. The mission has been successful so far, and the imminent dismantling of the criminal activities gives me a sense of accomplishment.
"Hello," I greet the bookseller as I walk into the store. "In the girlxgirl romance section, do you have anything involving a doctor?"
He smiles and guides me to the relevant section. He offer me a selection of titles, and I choose one that I think Paige would enjoy. The bookseller wraps it up for me, and I can't help but imagine Paige's reaction when she receives it. I thank thim and leave the store, making my way to Sarah Lee's place to pick up some things.
As I enter the house, I find Vanessa busy cooking in the kitchen. The aroma of the food fills the air, making my stomach growl.
"Hey, Vanessa," I greet her as I enter the house. "It smells amazing in here. What's cooking?"
Vanessa looks up from the stove and smiles at me. "Hey, Elizabeth! I'm making some lasagna for dinner. You told me I could come and sleep, so I came, but you never came back."
"Excuse me, Vanessa, I was busy. How are you?"
"I feel good at your place, I don't know why, I feel safe."
Maybe it's the fact that there's someone with a Winchester nearby watching over you.
"This is great. I have to go see Sarah Lee, I'll be right back."
