I frown at the phone. The caller ID says Blue. I can't ever remember him calling me before. I lean away from the computer and the report I was reading. Or trying to. Without Emma in the apartment, I've been drowning myself in work and school. But it's too quiet and my mind keeps wandering.

"Hey, Blue. What's up?" There's music in the background and a lot of noise.
"You need to get here. It's Emma."

My insides shrink, leaving lots of room for the fear that fills me up.

"What's wrong? Where are you?" I'm already moving.

My thoughts have a single track. Emma. Emma is in trouble, and I have to help her. I grab the car keys from the bowl and pull on the first pair of shoes I find. I'm already out the door.

"We're at the new club on third. Some guy is trying to get her to leave with him. She seems really out of it." Blue's words hit me like a sledgehammer, almost knocking me to the ground.

I'm racing toward my car. Blue keeps talking, but all I can think about is that Emma needs me. And I need her. I push away the scenarios that make me want to throw up. That have me seeing red. I won't let anything like that happen to Emma.

I break all the traffic laws getting there. Luckily, the traffic is light, and it's not far. Surprisingly, I don't get pulled over. I'm fairly certain I blow past several stop signs and a red light.

Never have I been so scared in all of my life. Blue's voice is still coming from the phone. Something about Hannah trying to stop the guy from taking Emma outside. Then there's a commotion. Blue swears and I hear several voices.

I pull up at the club and leave the car blocking half the street. A group of tattooed guys are standing by the door and I recognize Blue among them. Then I see Hannah. She's hugging herself and crying.

I storm over to them. When I see Emma, I slow down to a walk. She is leaning against the wall, some guy standing in front of her. I look her over. She's out of it. Her eyes are closed and she's not wearing a jacket. She doesn't seem to be aware of what's going on. My fists clench at my sides.

"Don't be like that," the guy in front of Emma is saying. "She wanted to come out with me."

I don't stop to listen to his story. His attention is still on Blue and his friends as my fist hits his jaw. He falls back, grunting and clutching at his face. I don't care. All I want is Emma.

"Emma? Princess? Are you ok?" I move her hair out of her face and she slumps into my arms. I pick her up. The guy is getting up from the ground.

"Do me a favor?" I stop in front of Hannah. She nods, her eyes panicked. "Take his picture. I want his face plastered all over campus." She brings out her phone. Her hands shake, but she snaps a few pictures of him.

"You want us to rough him up?" Blue asks. I look down at Emma. What would she want?

"Did he do anything to her?" The words cut like glass in my throat.

Blue shakes his head. "I don't think so. They were dancing and then he started leading her outside."

I nod at the man. He's standing now, shouting something about how we can't do this and he's innocent.

I nod at Blues. "Yeah, I'll owe you one."

Blue grins, a smirk that I haven't seen before. "No worries."

"Thanks."
"This is all a misunderstanding," the guy says.

"Hannah." I gesture to the car and she hurries ahead of me to open the door. I place Emma in the front seat and strap her in. Hannah gets in the back.

"Thanks for coming," she says and I can tell she's about to cry.

"You're safe now," I say it to her. To Emma. To myself. Because my insides are screaming to go back and help Blue beat the crap out of that bastard.
