It was the day before Winter Formal. You were in your bedroom staring at your dress that hung on your door.
You went dress shopping with Robin and Nancy but you hated all the options you and your friends picked. They all looked better on the hanger than they did on you and it completely frustrated you how picky you were actually being. Robin couldn't believe it either. Nancy however completely understood your reasoning and tried her best to help but in the end you ended up with nothing. Two days ago you were really contemplating just scrapping the whole thing the night of and telling Eddie you were sick, but knowing him he'd probably stop by to come nurse you back to health, and he was too good of a friend to lie to.
You opted to wear the dress you wore to your cousin's wedding back in June. It was a pale pink silk dress with lace bodice and sleeves. It was rather itchy but you felt comfortable in it.
Later that night your Mom came into your room. You had vented to her over dinner about what dress you had reluctantly decided to wear, and well she felt bad.
She had something behind her back, and getting a glimpse at it you knew instantly what it was,but you let your Mother speak."So..I thought about what you were saying at dinner. About your dress..and I know I said I wasn't going to let you until you were 18,but, I think now is as good a time as any.Pretty perfect actually." She smiled at you, excitedly.
You got up from where you sat at your desk doing your homework. That's when your Mom pulled out the dress from behind her. You knew it well as you had always admired it since you were a child. It was a vintage baby blue, lace and tulle tea length gown. It was your Mothers graduation dress, though she was saving it for your graduation day,Winter formal was close enough. You were thrilled and beyond excited to wear it.
The next day at school the air was buzzing with everyone making plans for before, during and after formal. Mostly everyone was meeting at a diner in town knowing well that the food they'd serve at the dance would be garbage. You heard some saying that there would be a huge gathering at Skull Rock, then there was Lover's Lake too,but there was no reason to be there. You knew where you going. Home to study for finals!! And if Eddie had any sense he would do the same.Massive amounts of hair spray filled the small bathroom as Judas Priests' "Living After Midnight" blared from Eddies boombox that sat ontop of the closed toilet as he primped in the mirror.
Suddenly the door pops open-"Uncle Wayne! I could have been on the can!" Eddie exclaimed, lowering the music.
"The door was unlocked, boy." Wayne says as he looked him up and down.
"Don't you think you outta put your hair back? It is a formal affair after all. You'll look nicer.""What do I tie it back with? A ribbon?"
Wayne chuckles at his nephew and walks away for a moment and comes back seconds later with a black piece of elastic to which he tied the two ends together making a make shift hair tie.
