. . .

I sucked in a sharp breath. The flashing lights blinded me as we walked into the event, Roman's hand pressed against my lower back I felt his fingers graze my thong beneath the satin material.

I couldn't focus, my mind was hectic and everything felt like a dream but I knew I was waking up and reality was crushing back down on me.

"Calm down," Roman low voice hits my ears, and another wave of panic rushed through me seeing how close he was.

I was scared, hell I could shit my pants right now and ruin this nine thousand-dollar dress. I nibbled at my bottom lip, probably smudging my lipstick.

The event was the dinner of the year, families that painted their homes red white, and blue, housewives of senators, mayors, governors, etc.  Were gathered here tonight.

I never missed a dinner, it would've been a bad look for my family and somehow this was the only thing I could live up to for them.

"Here," Roman handed me a glass of champagne, "I think we both need this tonight,"

I smiled softly, I nearly forgot I wasn't the only one who hated this dinner. Roman had the choice to come and out of all the years, he's been three times.

His hand stayed on my lower back as we circled the room, the movement was so simple as if we do this a million times before.

"I never understood these dinners or the reason people wanted their children to endure this torture of listing to people talk about politics," Roman chuckled, sending a warm sensation down between my legs.

Although his hand remained on my back, his attention touched me everywhere, "It's only for show, you know how this goes,"

Roman's gaze slide over to meet mine, A soft exhale parted my lips and my gaze found someone else. Sad green eyes met mine, so similar to the ones I'd admired growing up.

Iris latched onto Aarons's arm, it's like they all came in like a haul of bees. My brothers lined up next to her their eyes catching what she was looking at; me.

After all these years I still can't read the emotion in Ivan's eyes, everyone else had this look in their eyes but Ivan looked emotionless. Ares was upset, his brows turned downward looking at not me but the protected arm Roman had on my back.

"This is going to be a long night," I muttered, the words leaving my lips in a whisper.
