xiii's song : i know the end - phoebe bridgers

"after awhile, you went quiet and i got mean
i'm always pushing you away from me,
but you come back with gravity."

— "thank you."

"for what?" ethan scoffed, confused by her thanks. "you're one of the very few people who will actually go to walk with me." ximena answered in explanation.

"oh — yeah, sure." ethan smiled in response.

ximena's hand clutched her door handle, but she hesitated to open it and leave yet.

"umm," she stalled. "i had something to tell you, i just don't remember." she lied.

"ximena, go to sleep." ethan told her, drowsy himself. "beatrice isn't here, i'm gonna be alone." she complained.

"they won't get you, they can't." ethan assured, already knowing who she was talking about.

ximena nodded, although the reassurance didn't help much. "okay." she sighed and opened her door, craning back around to ethan before she closed it.

"goodnight." ximena says. "night. lock your doors, don't open it anymore. don't be stupid, ximena, you're smarter than that and i know you are." ethan warned before walking off.

ximena flashed a crooked smile even if ethan couldn't see it, and then she shut the door, locking it behind her as ethan told her to.

she stepped on the heel of her shoe and pulled it off, repeating that action to the other as she kicked it off her feet.

once she had done that, ximena plopped onto her bed, sprawled out. she exhaled deeply for a moment, sinking into the mattress.

before ximena could even manage to continue the endurance of all her thoughts and issues, someone banged their fists on the door.

"help me!" a feminine voice screeched. ximena went to jump to her feet, hitting her head on her headboard in response.

she grunted and sprinted toward the drawers in her closet. hands shaking, ximena pulled a drawer open and grabbed a gun, then stepping back when silence erupted.

"open the door, ximena!" a heartbreakingly familiar voice shouted. this time, it was masculine.

ximena dropped the gun, her heart seeming to go down with it. it clanged against the floor, and tears welled in ximena's eyes.
