I have not read about Melidaan except for in fanfics so excuse anything that seems unreasonable and remember this is a fanfic itself so some oddness is allowed. If you have no idea about Melidaan, no worries, you don't really need info beyond what I give you in this chapter... I hope. Do feel free to ask if you're confused, I'll provide what little I know.
Obi-Wan wasn't pacing. He was a Jedi master, renowned for his- For many things. Including the fact that he did not pace, because he was not pacing. He was simply walking to and fro, stretching his legs, releasing excess energy. It was a proven Jedi technique to aid meditation.
"Obi-Wan, you're pacing."
He did not grace such ridiculousness with a response.
Cody sighed, raising a singular eyebrow. His scar was pinched the same way it always was when he was worried, but was he worried for Obi-Wan or worried for the same reason Obi-Wan was?
In truth, there was nothing to get in such a tizzy over. Of course, if something came up, he'd be able to put aside his current worries and do whatever was necessary, but there wasn't a need for that right now, leaving him anxious and pacing.
Wait-
"Sit down. It's only been ten minutes," Cody reminded him.
Obi-Wan huffed, forcing himself into the seat beside Cody, taking the offered hand and squeezing it between his own. He probably squeezed too tightly but Cody didn't complain. "It's her first solo mission. Every senior padawan knows better than to miss a check-in on their first solo mission."
Cody merely smiled, squeezing so gently back. "She hasn't missed it. She's ten minutes late."
Obi-Wan prayed to the Force it would stay that way.
Cody put down the datapad he'd (theoretically) been working on. "I'll make us some tea while we wait."
Petra's first mission was a simple one, as they were always intended to be. A mishap with the knight-pair sent on a diplomatic mission had meant a gift intended for some rather important persons had been spaced. While the knight-pair had successfully made it to their destination, their lack of gift was going to be the cause of ever-increasing tension until a replacement was brought. It was important that this mission be completed, but far from dangerous. Even the diplomatic mission itself wasn't expected to be too complicated, more like a renewal of a treaty from a hundred years ago than any actual negotiation.
And yet, ten minutes stretched to twenty as Obi-Wan and Cody drank their floral tea. Twenty minutes stretched to over an hour as Obi-Wan went to teach a lesson in the Crèche. Two hours. Three.
A day.
After three days, he was finally allowed to go after his padawan. There was no reason for her to be radio silent, no whispers of anything suspicious in the region that would force her to stay off comms. It was possible her comms had been damaged but she should've arrived to deliver the gift by now and the knight-pair had confirmed there'd been no sign of her.
Within half an hour of being given permission, Cody and Obi-Wan were in a shuttle, ready for lift off. Of course, this was when his comm decided to ring with that infernal tune that meant the call was urgent. "Force," Obi-Wan muttered, fighting with his Jedi robes and its many pockets in the ungainly way he hadn't since he was barely a padawan himself.
Cody cleared his throat, holding out the offending device. "You tried to leave it behind."
Obi-Wan truly didn't know where his head was today. He'd have to spend his journey meditating. "Thank you, dear." The comm burst up with a blue hologram, a figure present from the shoulders up. "This is-"
