Sometimes I feel so single

Like a lonely island

Bobbing away from shore

When she touches his arm

He holds her hand tight

I scoot away on my bus seat

When he offers to pay

In exchange for a kiss

I wait in line behind

He says her name

Middle of the hallway, hugging

And I have to skirt around

I feel single, like one,

In these moments

It's not empowering

Not this time

When I see a couple

Here or on TV

It's not the kissing, the caressing,

Or the happily ever afters

That make me wonder about mine

No, instead it's

The smiles when they look away

The one tear of after love lifted sadness

The paintbrushes she bought that she knew he'd like

The photo they took on the street

That she didn't know he saved under "favourites"

It's everything in between

what the world sees as love

It's the moments left out of books

Everything that makes it love

When the confessions,

Jealousy, confusion, vows

Have all faded away

That's what makes me feel single

Knowing that I don't have

My person as my phone wallpaper

Someone to hug me

When I feel like I failed my test

Someone to call me,

Just to hear my voice

Someone who gets butterflies

When I smile too bright

Someone to hold my hand

During a dark walk after dark

Forget about kissing and promises

And grand declarations

I just want someone

To share all of my little pieces
