Do you ever think about

that morning we rode our bikes

past the convenience store, past the post office

all around the town and back

the sun was up, and then it was down

And we kept riding

You looked on ahead as I fell behind

My hair stuck to my forehead underneath my helmet

I wondered if my legs could keep going

But I didn't want to lose you to the summer sunset

A squirrel darted into the road

And you swerved onto the pavement

Skin over road, rocks and speckled blood

I laughed and cried

You pushed me over

We went home earlier that night than the others

I didn't mind,

because you texted me all night
