Demian POV

As I left the room, I couldn't help but feel a bit unsettled. This girl, Airyna, had no last name and had spent her entire life in an orphanage. It was a sad reality for many in the world, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more to her story.

I made my way to my office and sat down at my desk, staring at the paper with her name and address. I decided to do a quick search, and it didn't take me long to find out that the orphanage she was from had a shady history. There had been several cases of children disappearing or being sold off to human trafficking rings.

My heart clenched at the thought of Airy possibly being bought by one of those men sitting there. My wolf is making me have these thoughts that I want to rid from my brain. I cannot care for this girl, even if she is my mate I need to close any emotion I feel towards her.

I picked up the phone and dialed my head of security. "I need you to do a thorough investigation on a girl named Airyna from the orphanage on Elm Street. Find out if she has any family or connections to any human trafficking rings."

I hung up the phone and leaned back in my chair, she will be living here and nothing will happen to her, my pack will be a safe place for her.

As I was about to pick up the phone to call my Second In command, I heard a knock on my office door, "Come in" I said, knowing the scent of my Beta.

"I want to talk to you," I said to my Beta, Alex. He nodded and looked at me, waiting for me to continue. "I need you to assign a guard to her door at all times, Alex," I said, my tone serious. He immediately understood the gravity of the situation and nodded in agreement.

"I'll get one of the territory guards and post him there, Alpha," he said confidently. He had seen how she tried to run the other day, and he knew that we needed to keep a close eye on her.

"Good," I said, feeling a bit of relief wash over me. "Make sure that she's safe and that nothing happens to her, and she does not run away." I said "From now on she is your responsibility", Alex nodded and walked away to make the necessary arrangements. I couldn't shake this feeling that I couldn't even describe. Her scent was still lingering in my nose. The scent of fresh ocean and newly bloomed snow flowers. I will not be seeing her anymore as I will be leaving for a work trip for 5 days.

I tried to push her out of my mind, but I couldn't. I was so conflicted. As the Alpha of my pack, I had a duty to protect and provide for them, but I couldn't help but feel like there was something more to her. Maybe it was just my wolf's instincts telling me that she was our mate, but I didn't want to listen to my wolf.

As I packed my bags and prepared to leave for my trip, I couldn't help but wonder what she was doing. Was she scared? Did she miss her old life? I pushed those thoughts aside and focused on my work.

Airy POV

I was left dumbfounded when he walked out of the room without a word. My heart sank. I was left alone with my thoughts, desperate for answers. I replayed our conversation over and over in my mind, searching for any clues as to why he was so evasive. But my mind drew a blank, and I was left with nothing but confusion and a sinking feeling in my gut.

Just then, Vivian walked in with a tray of breakfast. Her cheerful demeanor was a stark contrast to my dark thoughts, but I tried to put on a brave face. "Hello, dear. I brought you some breakfast," she said, placing the tray on the small table. "Is the heater working alright?" I glanced over at the heater by the window, feeling a slight warmth emanating from it, I had forgotten about the existence of that heater. His presence was enough to distract me from it, "Yes, thank you," I managed to say.

Vivian looked around the room, her eyes lingering on the closed door. "Is everything okay?" she asked, a note of concern in her voice. I forced a smile and nodded, not wanting to burden her with my troubles.

As soon as Vivian left, I went to the window to distract myself. The view outside was bleak, with a courtyard and a dense forest in the distance. I realized that this was not the same entrance I had walked in from earlier. Panic rose in my chest as I scanned the area for an escape route. There were no gates or guards in sight, which could be a blessing or a curse.

My mind raced with thoughts of escape, but I knew I couldn't act rashly. I paced around the room, trying to come up with a plan.

I had to escape.

I heard some shuffling outside of the door so I slowly got closer to hear better.

"You will be posted here for 12 hours, after 12pm and Gary will take the AM shift" said a man, he did not sound like Alpha.

"Yes, Beta" the person replied.

Wait! Is there a guard on my door. No, no this is going to make my escape even harder. My only escape are the windows now!

And those damn things won't even budge, I tried everything even used the fork and the butter knife that Vivian brought with my breakfast that still sat there untouched.

I could break the windows with the chair or something heavy but that would make my escape useless, everyone would hear the sound of breaking glass. I had to think, "think, think Airy", I went to the door and opened it.

"Hello?" I said, a bit surprised that the door actually opened instead of being locked.

"Hello, ma'am," the man posted by the door said. He looked older than me. Why was he calling me ma'am? As I was about to step out of the frames of the door, he held his hand in a guard of 'stop,' "You can't leave the room," he said with a stern tone and face. So, I stepped back

"Why not?" I asked

"Alpha's orders" he replied with a dry tone.

I knew it! With that I just went back inside.
