CHAPTER SIX
through the fold

- [♤] -

IT WAS NOW NIGHT AND THE FULL MOON SHONE BRIGHTLY IN THE SKY. Everyone, but Jesper, had regrouped and currently followed Arken who lit the way with the torch in his hand. Julie naturally gravitated towards Kaz, who had Milo walking attached to a piece of rope with him holding the end, and walked by his side. He would most likely never admit this to anyone but he enjoyed it when she walked next to him. He had to stop the corner of his lips from twitching upwards.

"We're almost there." Arken announced.

"Where the hell is Jesper?" An unimpressed Kaz asked.

"Just a little further."

"Landmines." Inej said as they approached a sign.

"We'll wait." Kaz spoke over the goats bleating whilst Arken walked forwards. "Follow the path you'll carve."

"That sign, that was my idea to keep people away. Can't be too careful. We're fine. Come."

"Hmm, clever." Julie mumbled.

Arken continued walking and the three crows exchanged looks with one another, debating if they should trust him. He was, after all, a complete stranger to them. Inej was the first one to move and soon the other two followed her. Julie hoped that Jesper would get here soon. She was sure that Kaz would maybe leave him behind if he took too long. She'd do her best to get him to wait of course.

"It's one thing hearing about it, but this is-" Inej began to speak as they moved closer to the fold.

"Nothing compared to what lies within." Arken cut her off.

He handed her the torch and they all stood in place. He wandered a little further off. Goosebumps had erupted on Julie's skin as she stared at the fold. She was typically brave but seeing that ominous abyss had her wanting to hide away.

"It will be okay." Kaz whispered to her, hoping to not get the others' attention.

"Mhm. Sure." She whispered back.

"I mean it. I won't let anything happen to you."

She was about to reply but got cut off by Arken directing what seemed to be an abandoned train there way.

"There. So, goat, jurda... Thank you." Arken said, out of breath. Each of the items were handed over to him. "Now we're just waiting on..."

Gunshots were heard in the distance. Everyone's heads snapped over to the source and were met with Jesper, along with the people who were shooting at him, running towards them.

"Wait for me!" He shouted.

"They can't see the train." Arken panicked. He snatched the torch from Inej which caused Julie to glare at him.

"Jesper, get here now!" Kaz commanded.

"Leave the lantern!" Inej shouted.

"Landmines!" Jesper shouted in a panic just before a bullet missed him and hit the warning sign.

"Just run!" Julie yelled.

"Oh, wait for me!" Jesper dropped the lantern and finally ran towards them before he spoke through clenched teeth. "Don't you go without me! Wait!"

Guns continued to be fired his way and Jesper had miraculously not been hit by any of them. Or perhaps the men just had a really bad aim. In the meantime, Kaz, Julie, Inej and Arken had clambered onto the train so they could make a quick escape as soon as Jesper joined them.
