The hospital was a mess when we arrived. There was blood coating the floors and walls like a thick coat of paint, almost everything had been pushed over and there was shattered glass scattered around. Willie, Caleb and Tía stayed in the van, whilst me, Dad and Julie armed ourselves with knives and the gun Willie had before entering the building. Bits of flesh were all around us, the overwhelming smell of vomit, blood and piss surrounding us. We explored the area, searching for fridges that may hold insulin and anything else we may find useful, such as bandages and crutches for Caleb. While checking out a small bedroom, containing a wide array of needles and lots of blood, I heard a small sound. It wasn't anything of note, just a bit of rustling, barely noticeable, until it happened again. This time, I spun around, pointing the pistol in the direction of the sound. It was too quiet to be one of the infected. "Who's there?"I called out. "I don't want to hurt you, but if you try to hurt me I will. Now come out!" Nothing. I chalked it up to my imagination and turned my back, continuing to look for medication and anything else of use. I found a singular crutch that I tucked under my arm, torch in one hand and gun in the other. Suddenly, I heard the sound again, followed by footsteps. I spun around and caught a young boy, short and thin with brown hair, wearing a sleeveless shirt. "Who the fuck are you?"I asked, pointing my gun at him.
"Who are you and why are you here?"he replied.
"I asked first, dipshit." The boy glared at me.
"Just get what you need and leave, okay?"
"Where's the insulin kept?"
"I dunno, I don't live here, it's a fucking hospital, go find a map or something."
"Did your parents not teach you manners?"
"Did your parents not teach you not to point a gun at strangers?" I sighed, glaring at him as I slowly lowered my gun. Suddenly, I felt a pair of arms behind me, putting a hand on my mouth and covering my head with a bag. Before I knew it, something hard hit my head, and I was knocked out.
Some amount of time later, I awoke again. In front of me was the boy, along with another boy, this one taller and raven.
"Who the fuck are you?"taller boy said.
"None of your business, let me go,"I replied, shaking my hands to try and free myself from the ropes. Taller boy held up my own gun and pointed it to my head.
"I'll ask again. Who. The fuck. Are. You,"he repeated.
"Bobby. Who are you?"I finally answered.
"Not important. What are you here for?"
"Insulin. Can you tell me where to find it?"
"No. Is there anyone else with you?" I thought for a moment.
"No, I'm alone. My friend who needs it stayed behind." Taller boy leaned back slightly, smiling creepily at me.
"You have a base?" I shook my head. He scoffed. "Useless."
"Look, I'm not here to hurt anyone, okay?"I said, trying to make peace. "I just want to get some insulin and leave."
"If you didn't want to hurt anyone, then why did you point a gun at my friend here?" He gestured to the shorter boy beside him, who was smiling innocently.
"He just caught me off guard, then wasn't very nice. I wasn't gonna shoot him." Taller boy tilted his head a little, then slid the gun over to the shorter boy, picking up his own knife that was coated in multiple layers of blood.
"I'll be right back,"he said, standing up. "Don't try anything, Bobby,"he added, spitting out my name. He then left, closing the glass door behind him.
"So if you're here alone..."the short boy began. "Then you don't know the girl and old man who are here, do you?"
