Chapter: 57
******The Weretiger began to tremble again, snuggling deeper into his arms with a barely audible gasp. Cooing softly, Conri brought the blankets up around himself and his lover, taking a moment to caress Caleb's cheek before wrapping his arm around the other again. Within minutes, he realized the trembling wasn't from the cold, Caleb's growing whimpers and protests telling him so. The weretiger had woken up many times, barely got an hour's sleep before jerking awake from nightmares. So again, Conri ran his hands down the Weretiger's back, shushing him, trying to keep him asleep.
This time, his lover fell quiet, untensing and resuming his snuggling, a faint smile gracing his lips again. Conri too began to smile, but it faded as the restlessness of his lover began to settle within his heart. He wondered why he wasn't sleeping as soundly as he had done the night of his Rut. Did he perhaps cause it with his absence the entire day? Each time he would jerk awake, he would curl deeper into his side, and his hand around his waist would tighten as if he was afraid of letting him go. He knew Caleb adores his neediness, but now it seems it had doubled tenfold. Conri frowned. He Broke him. He's made him live in constant fear. Fear of a life without his Lycan.
Nuzzling his cheek against Caleb's, he closed his eyes. He would not be leaving him today. He will stay by his side until he wakes up. His own mind was already beginning to drift back to sleep when Caleb began to shift in his sleep, his brow furrowed in sorrow and his lips parting with small whimpers. There wasn't much hope of getting any more sleep for him. It had been nearly an hour and a half of sleep this time, and Conri decided they wouldn't get any luck for more rest. So gently, he shook the weretiger's shoulders, whispering in his ear it was time to wake. His mate's face worked in confusion, the squirming growing until with a start, Caleb's eyes opened. They immediately fell on Conri and he threw himself at him in a tight embrace which had a smile spread across Conri's face.
"You're not going to leave me?" He asked quietly, a hint of hurt coloring his voice.
Conri's stomach clenched at seeing Caleb's vulnerability, and despite the fact that he should have felt relieved by seeing his mate's expression, he could only feel regret. "No, darling. I wouldn't." He kissed Caleb's cheek, pulling back just enough to stare into his wet eyes. "Is this what you have been so afraid of? That I would leave you?" He asked, and Caleb nodded, biting down on his lower lip in nervousness. "Listen to me, I know I was stupid, I acted foolishly, I punished you, and I shouldn't have..." Conri sighed. His voice dropped to a whisper. "But I love you. So very much, and I could never leave you. Even with the punishment I made sure my eyes followed you everywhere. I kept watch over you, I wouldn't let anything happen to you. I just needed you to see for yourself the mother you trust so much. I would not hurt you as they did, and I would never leave you as he did. I promise. I love you."
"You brought him back, and you saw me and walked away. You were eating from his hands, and he looked at me as if he had won. I know what I did was unforgivable, but please, just this once, give me a second chance. I promise to make everything right again." Caleb sounded like he was about to cry.
Conri's heart broke. How long had this nightmare been plaguing him? Why couldn't Caleb see it was all over? That he was home, right where he belonged. That his place has been restored, and even the Fox never stood a chance. How would he make him see? Would it take a thousand words written out on parchment to change how Caleb sees the world, and him? To show him that he is worth more than anything else? That he deserved the world. Conri reached out, brushing a thumb across Caleb's cheek. "There is no way to make it right because we can not change the past. But please, darling. Just this once. Don't make it impossible for me to be with you again. Let me show you what it means to have a Fated Pair. To share your body, and soul with another being. Let me love you without restraint.''
