The sound of fabric rustling echoed through the room where Hyunsuk was sitting alone, infornt a mirror as he looked at his reflection. He was decked up in a red hanbok, bejeweled with pearls and necklaces of all kinds and in a few hours he would be declared as Park Jihoon's 'wife'.
Marrying Jihoon wasn't his choice but at the same time it quite was. Prioritising the family over his own feelings was definitely his own decision and not that he was regretting it; it was too late for that anyways.
A knock was heard on the door, followed by the voice of one of the court ladies who were sent to get him ready,
"Please step out, we have to leave for the palace. The ceremony will begin anytime soon."
Hyunsuk sighed as he glanced up at his room one last time, soaking in all the memories he had cherished there till nineteen years of his life. He didn't know how often he'll be allowed back home, or worse if he will be even.
The farewell was heartbreaking, no matter how tough of a front Hyunsuk might put up, at the end of the day he is an emotional omega. Watching his parents and annoying little dongsaeng shed tears of guilt as they escorted him to the main door of their home, left him teary too. After sharing tight hugs with the three of them, he was compelled to quickly leave for the palace. Of course his parents were going to be there but this was the last time when they had him only as their 'son'.
The ride to the palace felt long and suffocating, but not as much as the silence he had to bear in an unknown palace room, waiting for the arrival of his groom.
Jihoon appeared some time later, clad in a royal blue hanbok, donned with gold details. He looked handsome but not a spark of excitement on his face, rather there was only visible contempt for this entire situation.
Hyunsuk spoke no words, he did not have the energy to argue but Jihoon had already decided on giving him a hard time.
"Don't expect me to act like a husband. This is nothing but a political marriage."
Hyunsuk was left at a loss of words by Jihoon's insensitivity. He could have gone by without saying anything but he chose to spit out that nonsense. And Hyunsuk would have definitely walked out if not for remembering the words that his mother spoke to him, 'You're my strong child, we'll never be less grateful to you for this. And don't forget to properly fulfill your duties as the crown prince's consort.'
So he kept his mouth zipped while Jihoon left the room.
After a long series of rituals, the ceremony ended with Jihoon and Hyunsuk being declared a couple. The entire thing was broadcasted on the national television. They looked good together, that was the popular opinion which they themselves certainly did not agree on. Then they moved on to seek blessings from all the royals.
"Oh my, this kid is so cute, my Jihoon is lucky to have you!" The dowager queen seemed to have taken an adoration for Hyunsuk who no doubt looked like a delicate princess.
He smiled in response as he was happy to see someone genuinely comforting him with nice words in that cold atmosphere.
It was now his parents' turn and while his dad fumbled up all of the words that he was supposed to speak, his mother held Jihoon's hands and said,
"I entrust my dear son to you. He's not perfect so please be kind to him. He has never stayed away from us either so please take care of..him." Her voice broke as she spoke.
Jihoon felt extremely guilty while nodding to each of her requests because he wasn't himself sure if he'd be able to fulfil any of them.
They were then escorted to their rooms where they could rest for a while before getting ready for the evening ball, where they'd have to greet other important aristocrats. Thankfully the royal family wasn't as firm on getting them to share a room so they had separate ones, but the two rooms were just opposite to each other, at a distance of few steps.
