"Look," Owens points to a room on the blueprints of the building he had luckily found in one of the shelves, "this is us, and this is the nearest exit." He points to the sheet of paper representing the layout of the first floor. You were currently on the third, so there was some way to go. "But even if we somehow make it there, there's no way out."
"Cool," you comment tonelessly. You were hungry and starting to wish you had taken more pancakes with you when you left the Byers'.
"What do you mean?" Hopper asks after sending you an annoyed look.
"The locks are fail secure."
"Fail secure?" Joyce questions.
"If there's a power outage, the building goes on lockdown."
"So we're totally stuck," you whisper to Mike, who nods.
"Unless power magically turns back on."
"Can it be unlocked remotely?" Bob asks.
"With a computer, sure, but somebody's gotta reset the breakers."
"Where are the breakers?" Hopper looks at the map, motioning for Owens to show him.
"Breakers are in the basement, three floors down." The scientists points at a room, and Hopper grabs the map before walking towards the door.
"Hey, where are you going?" Bob follows him. Hopper turns around.
"To reset the breakers."
"Okay, then what?"
"Then we get the hell out of here."
"No, then the power comes back on. If you wanna unlock the doors, you have to completely reboot the computer system, and then override the security codes with a manual input."
"...What?" you let out, and Mike shakes his head, as confused as you. Hopper was, too.
"Fine, how do I do that?"
"You can't," Bob shakes his head. "Not unless you know BASIC."
"What's his job again?" You whisper to Mike.
"Manager at Radio Shack."
"Okay," you nod.
"I don't know what that means," Hopper admits.
"It's a computer programming language," Mike speaks up, and you look at him, impressed.
"Teach it to me," Hopper shrugs.
Bob scoffs. "Shall I teach you French while I'm at it, Jim?"
"I can do that," you say quietly, not wanting to interrupt their argument. You liked the drama too much, it distracted your mind from thinking about how you were probably all going to die.
"How about a little German?" Bob continues, before turning to Owens. "How about you, Doc? You speak BASIC?"
"No," the man sighs.
"Okay," Bob scoffs again, "I got this. I got this."
"No," Joyce pleads. "Bob-"
"It's okay," he hugs her, and you can see how scared he is by the way his eyebrows furrow when he holds her. "It's gonna be okay. Remember, Bob Newby, superhero."
The adults eloborate some kind of plan including Hopper getting out with Bob to find a walkie and a weapon on a guard somewhere. You and Mike wish you had taken your bags when you left the Byers', because you always had your walkies in there. Maybe you should have preferred this to the pancakes. Pancakes were temporary, walkies were forever. This would be your new slogan, you promised yourself, if you got out of there alive.
