Maddi's POV
"Ouch!" I squeaked as I was dropped onto my head. Axel was trying to one man me and he couldn't get the grips right. Rick and Kendal were talking things out in our room while my face was repeatedly being smashed into the bright green bermuda grass.
It had been a while since I had gone to practice and finally after yesterday, I was able to go again. Teaching Axel to stunt was a two-day task.
"Maddi, are you ready?" My best friend asked. I hopped up with some grass sticking to me and jumped into the pool. All the grass washed off, which was my plan, but obviously not Axel's. He jumped on top of my head and I went under. I broke the water's surface as I rose to breathe. Laughing, I splashed him into the face. I scrambled out of the pool as fast as I could. I ran to the upstairs bathroom (I was trying to be as far away from Axel as I could get) after grabbing practice clothes and locked the door.
I slipped on my 'Smoed' sports bra and paired it with bright yellow nike pros. I slipped on my Nfinities being sure to double-knot them and started drying my hair. I added a pouf and dabbed on some powder and finished my mascara.
"Kendal," I declaimed. "I'm readyyy!" I elongated the y. "You look cute!" She replied and I laughed at her sarcasm. We were wearing the same thing.
I slid on the edge of the staircase like I used to as a kid and tripped at the end, sending me flying into the island in the kitchen. Kendal had been walking down the stairs like a normal person when I fell. She was laughing so hard no sound came out and tears were in her eyes. I got up rubbing my head and joined in the laughing.
I grabbed a handful of Cheez-itz from the bowl on the counter and walked into the garage to start my car. Kendal got in and we pulled up to the gym to start stretching. We were here early considering that we had missed two days.
"Nice to see you ladies again," Eddie remarked. I sat up out of my spilt and gave him a hug. He's a real softie once you get to know him. He hugged me back and Kendal and I explained how much had happened over the two days we were gone.
The rest of the team came in and lots kf hugs were exchanged as we set into our first position. We were in partner stunts. We set into a extension lib to tick tock heel-stretch to full down, since I was center, I perfectly executed a kick full, kick double. Then, the flyers got set out and stood with one leg in the air. The bases propelled the flyers into extension and now we were in an arabesque. We double downed and set out. Eddie clapped and told us to get a water break.
After four hours of stunting and one hour of conditioning, I couldn't even drive. I called Axel to come pick us up. We barely made it to his car before collapsing in the backseat. I'm not sure how long the drive was, but by the time we got home, I was fast asleep.
Axel lifted me out of the car carefully, as not to wake me, and carried me all the way to my room.
The next morning, I woke up at eight. Someone's arm was around me. I turned my head and saw that Axel had fallen asleep in my bed, right next to me. My stomach grumbled (I fell asleep before eating dinner) and his eyes flew open. He sheepishly grinned and muttered a "Sorry," before getting out of bed and going to the kitchen. I slipped on some boxers and a one of Axel's shirts and made my way to the kitchen.
My breath hitched as I realized he wasn't wearing a shirt. He was flipping pancakes in his grey sweatpants with the band of his plaid boxers showing. My face grew hot and I crossed where he was to get to the pantry.
I could not like Axel. He was my best friend of like 5 years! I thought to myself. Your boyfriend just broke up with you. Snap out of it.
This little conversation went on in my head for a while until some messy brown hair popped into the pantry and turned on the light. "Need anything D-Mad?" He asked. My old nickname. I shook my head and he smiled at me. "Well then ya better get out of the pantry and help me cook some breakfast!" In one fell swoop, he had grabbed me and flung me over his shoulder. He twirled around with me and finally set me down.
I was so dizzy that I started to trip. And it so happens that I tripped - right into his arms. He set me down, again, and I grabbed another pancake flipper. We were silently flipping pancakes until he plugged his phone into an Aux cord. He turned on Pandora and came back to where I was standing. He started plating up the cakes just as a slow song came on. He wiggled his eyebrows and took my hand. We slow danced around the pancakes and he twirled me around. This was Heaven.
I came to the conclusion as we were dancing that I had really missed him. The song stopped and just in the nick of time as Kendal sleepily shuffled into the kitchen. We set down our creation in front of her and she dug in.
Axel smiled at me and I knew that we had made some darn good pancakes. She said "Thanks." And went upstairs to wake Rick.
Then her sock slipped and she fell down the stairs landing on her neck which had an unmistakable crack. I ran over to her and tried to feel her pulse. Nothing. My best friend was dead.
(JK😂 I started randomly typing and that's how it turned out. Now back to the real story.😘)
Once Kendal had gotten all the way up the stairs, Axel gave me a kiss on the cheek. "You're a good dancer." He uttered and walked downstairs to get in the pool.
I felt something in my stomach, almost butterflies, and then came back to my conclusion that I strictly ONLY loved him as a friend. I changed into my swimsuit and ran outside for another water fight.
