it was true.
geto did remember satoru mentioning it first. before you had told satoru what you planned to do tomorrow.
and there were only two people who could have known about that.
you and the one who had texted you.
geto resisted the urge as a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. the current situation had been unforeseen and unanticipated that geto couldn't but feel slightly awkward with this sudden news. and when he felt awkward, geto had a tendency to smile or rather grimace. but he knew a smile would undermine the severity of the words that spilled from your lips.
you believed geto when he had said it wasn't him. and that belief had also been assured by the fact that you were there when he found out you were receiving texts at the party. you had seen his emotions first-hand, seeing his face show something in between pain, pity and guilt. you were also assured by your love for him, you knew suguru. and you knew that he could never hurt you.
"y/n wait. let's think about this. why would satoru do that? to keep us apart or something."
"maybe," you spoke through sniffles.
the mere prospect of your closest friends betraying you had been enough for you to break down. whether it had been gojo or geto, neither outcome would've been one you wanted. between two people you loved, one romantically and the other platonically, you didn't know if you could choose with ease. although you had felt relieved that it wasn't geto, you had also felt guilt. you had known gojo years before you met geto in middle school, so why did it feel like you were the one betraying gojo for feeling relief that it was him and not his friend.
"but why would he?" you continued, trying to rationalise the situation, "i know him. it doesn't make sense for him to do that. all those messages–"
you hadn't shown it but the words sent to you had really hurt you. and the first message wasn't even the worst of it. the texts had continued on, talking about your supposed lack of worth, about your family, your fears that only the people closest to you would know.
geto laughed bitterly, "i did always joke that he has a god complex. maybe he did it just because he could." geto edged closer to you as he continued, "i don't want to come between you two, but y/n, it could be him. we can't ignore the fact that what he said points to him. how could he have known if it wasn't him." he coaxed. geto gently wiped away the fresh tears as he stroked your back.
just then, you heard the boy in question whine from the living room below, "suguru! food!"
"y/n, i've got to go otherwise he might get suspicious. just promise you won't do anything stupid while i'm gone, okay?" he placed a gently hand to the side of your cheek as he caressed it, "everything'll be fine. i'll be back before you know it."
