"Dark de Valentine, Adeline Julia." McGonagall called Riley's name, and she walked up to the stool. The sorting hat was placed on her head.
"Um, hi... what's your name? I don't think I caught it." Everyone gasped, and blinked twice. The Ravenclaws put down their books. The Slytherin's mocked how she must be a muggleborn. The Gryffindors leaned in eagerly. The Hufflepuffs looked as if they were to faint.
"My, my, Miss Adeline Julia. In all my years of serving this school, no wizard or witch has ever had the thought to ask my name. It's Henry, by the way." Henry said.
"Well, that was rude of them, not asking your name. My name's Riley. How are you doing, Henry?"
Everyone held their breath, "I'm doing very well, my dear, very well. Now, where to put you? Gryffindor would love such kick, but Slytherin would worship such skill. Hufflepuff would value such thoughtfulness, but Ravenclaw would celebrate such wisdom. What do you say, my dear Riley?"
"I'm not sure, Henry. I don't know what the houses mean. Why don't you ask the teachers?" Riley swung her legs on the stool.
Henry let out a heart chuckle, "But they would want you in their own houses, don't you see?"
"Yes, I suppose they would."
"What are your parent's names, Riley dear?"
"I'm not sure, Henry. I was adopted, and my parents were muggles." Riley started to fiddle with her fingers.
"Oh, then what is your wand?"
"Oh, I got honeysuckle branch, eleven-and-three-quarters, and a strand of my own hair for a core."
Henry inquired further, "Olivander's does not make custom wands. And muggleborn hair is not a core."
"No. I spent five hours at Olivander's, but still didn't get a wand. Then, I took a walk, and there was this guy. He asked me what was wrong, and I told him what happened. So, he asked for a strand of my hair and he took out some wood from his pocket. He let me watch him make my wand, and it works perfectly."
"Well, this is strange. Okay, I want you to put me down, and stay at my side, okay? Then wait for me to sort twenty people, and whatever the house of the twentieth witch or wizard is your house. Here that, Riley?"
"Okay, Henry."
So, nineteen people came, and then it was time for the twentieth person.
"Lovegood, Luna."
Luna came and sat on the stool.
"Ravenclaw!"
The Ravenclaws cheered.
"Goodbye, Henry. That was the twentieth person."
"Goodbye, Riley. Meet me every Saturday at 4 for tea in Dumbledore's office. No excuse, just write to me if anyone stops you."
"See you on Saturday, Henry." Riley went and sat down next to Luna. Luna put her hand out for her to shake.
"Luna Lovegood."
"Just call me Riley." She took it gladly.
"I have a question. Where does Riley come from?" Luna seemed generally curious.
"My only normal middle name." She laughed.
(By the way, if you think that was weird, I was originally planning a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors between the Head Girls/Boys. Now that would have been something.)
