That's Not Nice

"Paupau, Teytey, dance kayo dito sa gitna!!" one of their playmates, Nico, suggested.

Paulo had his hands wrapped around Stell, while Stell's are on his shoulders, as they merrily danced and swayed with a big smile on their faces. The kids sang and sprinkled the flower petals around.

A father named Mr. Eduardo Bawalan came early to pick up his son, Nico. He was a large, intimidating man who had a stern expression on his face as he watched the kids.

"What game are you playing, kids?" He asked a little girl near him.

"Nagpick kami ng flowers to make crowns, and kinasal po namin si Paupau at Teytey!" The girl cheerily replied. 

The man's face immediately curled into an expression of disgust when he spots the two little boys from a few meters away, dancing hand in hand, giggling and blushing, while the other kids are watching and teasing them together.

Oh no, no, no. 'Di pwede 'to.

Napatigil ang mga bata nang may boses ng lalaki ang sumaway sa kanila.

"Dios ko, anong ginagawa nyo ha?"  The man asked, his voice booming.

Teytey, Paupau, near them turned around to see an angry-looking man approaching their space.

"Dad-?" The man's son, Nico, says. He made a noise of surprise when his father gripped his arm and yanked him away from the other kids.

"Halika dito, Nico, huwag kang lumapit sa mga yan!"

Paulo is taken aback. 

Why is Nico's dad yelling at us?

"Alam nyo ba yang ginagawa nyo ha?" The father demanded, eyes narrowed and voice sharp.

 "Etong--, ganitong klase ba ng mga laro ang ginagawa nyo? Pinapayagan lang kayo-" He continued to sputter, looking around. "-Nasan ba yang teacher nyo ha? Nang masampolan yan, pinapabayaan lang kayong gumawa ng kalokohan."

"P-pau?" Tey whispered to his friend, his face and voice laced with fear and confusion.

"At kayong dalawa?" Tey and Pau flinched when the man speaks again, now directly to them. "Alam ba yan ng mga magulang nyo?"

Paulo thinks it's a stupid question, of course, Daddy knows we're playing when we go here!

"W-we're just playing po." He said, his voice quivering.

The man's face grew red. "Playing? Ng alin, 'toy? Kayong dalawa? Kasal kasalan?" he spat. "Bakit, babae ka ba? Pareho kayong lalake diba?"

"Opo."

"Bata bata nyo pa, babakla bakla na kayo. Masama yan. Pag yan kinalakihan nyo... Tch. Tapos nakikipaglaro pa kayo sa anak ko?! Goodness, I can't believe this."

Hindi na makasagot si Paupau. Teytey's heart sank. 

Bakit siya nagagalit? Bakit tinatanong niya kung girl si Paupau? Bad ba yung ginagawa namin? Papagalitan din ba si Nico kasi nakipag play siya samin? 

Hindi niya maintindihan, pero alam niyang hindi ito maganda sa pakiramdam. He wanted to defend himself and his friend, pero hindi naman niya alam kung anong sasabihin niya. He's too scared to do anything but make himself smaller than he already was, and hide behind Paulo.

"I'm sorry po," Pau said softly, feeling a lump form in his throat. 

The man continued to scold and preach to the kids, his voice growing louder and more menacing with each passing moment. 

Teytey's cheeks burn with shame. He had never been talked to like this before, especially not by a stranger. 

No, Papa Josh never yelled at him. Papa never got mad at him. Does this mean Papa will also get mad when he finds out what they were playing?

Teytey cannot pay attention to what Nico's dad is telling them, no. The thought of his own Papa being upset with him is enough to make the poor child tear up. Paulo felt Tey slowly cowering behind him, his small hands lightly shaking as he grips on Pau's shirt. Paulo took his hand and held it tightly. 

The children felt like it had been ages already when it was only barely two minutes since the man started berating them. They felt helpless, and Paulo wishes teacher Jah would come back already and rescue them from the scary mean dad.

Vio was glaring at the father, anger simmering beneath the surface as they felt like they were being treated unfairly. They were so ready to throw the hairbrush they were holding, politeness be damned, but their friend stopped them.
