As the party raged on, I had a sudden realization. "I haven't seen Sophie in, like, a week!"

"Huh, yeah, I forgot you had a girlfriend." Ruby shrugged. "I'm sure she'll understand."

Just then, as if she had been summoned by my exclamation, Sophie came through the giant doors to the throne room. She struck a pose as if she had just walked onto a sitcom set and was waiting for the audience to clap before shouting "MAMA'S HOME!!!"

I shrieked, insanely startled by her presence. "Sophie?! But if you're here, then..."

"Yep! Dead as a doorknob!" She laughed, as if she couldn't have cared less about the situation. "I shoulda seen it coming, to be honest. Totally my fault for being a doofus."

"What happened?"

"Well, you remember Joey, my roommate?"

"Aw, shit. Yeah, I do."

"You'll never believe it, but he-"

"Yeah, I know. It was kind of obvious. I figured you knew already."

"I...Did not." She sheepishly looked at the ground. "He wasn't the one that did it, though, it was the other ones that he was hiding from. They caught up to him and didn't wanna leave any human witnesses. They let me choose either to die or to become one of them, and I chose death, because fuck that noise."

"Fair enough. At least you made it here."

"I'm just glad I get to see you on your birthday!" She flashed me a smile. "Now, we have some catching up to do. Tell me all about what happened when you got back here."
