We were walking down wooden steps that creaked as we stepped on each one. María was sleeping in my arms. "Why the heck would you want to be a musician?" Héctor asked Miguel, annoyed. "Chico, believe me, being a musician can make you lose everything." I told him as I looked back at Miguel. I then looked down at María. "Everything." I whispered.
"My great-great-grandmother was a musician." Miguel told us, making my brother scoff. "Who spent his life performing like a monkey for complete strangers." Héctor rolled his eyes. I shivered in disgust. "Aye, no, no!" I shook my head.
Miguel was silent for a moment. "So, how far is this guitar anyway?" He called out to us.
We faced him with smiles. "We're almost there." We said simultaneously as Héctor jumped off the wooden ledge. "Yeah, no." I said as I Miguel down the stairs nearby.
We walked under a stone arch that had skeletons with wings. Héctor looked amazed at what he saw. "Cousin Héctor! Cousin y/n!" A few of our friends greeted us from their wooden broke down house. "Hey!" I waved and held María in one arm. "Little María!" The added which woke my daughter up. I shook my head. "These people are all your family?" Miguel asked, looking confused.
I shrugged as Héctor tried to explain. "In a way. We're all the ones with no photos or oferndas." Héctor told him. "Forgotten. No family to go home to." I added bitterly.
'If only my stubborn husband would listen to me for once!' I thought to myself.
Héctor grabbed a bottle of something and walked over to tía Chelo and her two friends. Her poured them drinks. "Aye, and little María." Chelo smiled as she and her friends cooed over my daughter. "Is Chicharrón around?" Héctor asked as he held to glasses that held the alcohol. "Eh, in the bungalow." Chelo points. "I don't know if he's in the mood for visitors." She hummed.
Héctor scoffed. "Who doesn't like a visit from cousin Héctor and cousin y/n?" He asked as we led Miguel to Chicharrón's bungalow.
"The signs that say stay out?" I asked witha raised 'eyebrow'. Héctor waved me off as we walked through the curtain.
Héctor placed one glass on a crate near the hammock. "Buenas noches, Chicharrón!" Héctor greeted him with a smile as he took off Chicharrón's hate.
My face fell into a frown seeing his state.
"I don't want to see your stupid face, Héctor." He hissed at my brother. I gave María to Miguel, who looked freaked out, holding a skeleton baby. I walked over. "What about me?" I asked, smiling brightly as I slung my boney arm around Héctor. "Y/n, of course you're here." He grumbled. "Oh, come on, amino, it's Día de Muertos. You should be celebrating with us." I told him with a smile.
Chicharrón just glared at me. "Héctor that's your cue." I hissed. "Oh! We brought you an offering." Héctor smiled, holding a glass of alcohol towards Chicharrón. "Get out of here." Chicharrón groaned, trying to hide in the metal cans and other things that surrounded him in his hammock.
"We would Cheech. Really, we would." I told him with a shy smile. Héctor setting the glass on the nightstand next to his hammock. "What my sister is trying to say is us and our friend, Miguel. We really need to borrow your guitar." Héctor said. I looked back at Miguel. "This is going to go great." I said sarcastically.
"MY GUITAR!?" Chicharrón said quickly, grabbing his guitar and holding it close. "Saw that coming." I sighed. "Please Chicharrón." I said quickly. "I promise to bring it right back." Héctor told him.
I had to hold back the unlady like snort that was gonna come out of my mouth. "Like that time you promised to bring back my van? Or my mini-fridge? Or my good napkins? My lasso? My femur?" Chicharrón shot each question quickly at my brother. "You took his femur?" I asked withw ide eyes at my brother. He was about to respond when Chicharrón started to glow gold. He groans in pain, and I help him lay back down.
"No. Chicharrón." I whispered with wide eyes as I grabbed his hand. "I'm fading, Héctor, Y/n." Chicharrón sighs. "I can feel it." He slowly looks at his prized guitar. "I couldn't play that thing even if I wanted to." He wheezes out. "You-you play me something." He said towards my brother. "No. You know I don't play anymore. Cheech." Héctor said, holding his hands up as we both shared a look. "The guitar is for the kid." I added.
"You want it. You got to earn it." He whispered. "Héctor. Please do it." I told him as I walked over to Miguel and took María from him. "Ay, only for you, amigo." Héctor sighed, taking the guitar.
I pulled a chair up next to my hammock as my brother leaned against the hammock. "Any requests?" Héctor asked as he strums the guitar. "You know my favorite, Héctor." Chicharrón chuckled.
Héctor started to play soft music as I rolled my eyes with a playful smile. 'If he sings the actual version...I'm gonna kill him with a chancla.' I thought to myself with a smile.
🎶Well, everyone knows Junita🎶
🎶Her eyes each a different color🎶
🎶Her teeth stick out, and her chin goes in🎶
My brother eyes widened with realization when he saw me giving him a glare and saw Miguel looking at him smiling.
🎶And her...knuckles they drag on the floor🎶
Chicharrón frowns at Héctor. "Those aren't the woods."
"There are children present." I hummed with a smile.
🎶Her hair is like a briar🎶
🎶She stands in a bow-legged stance🎶
🎶And if I were so ugly🎶
🎶She'd possibly give me a chance🎶
I heard Chicharrón chuckle softly as he looked at Héctor and I. "Brings back memories." He smiles, looking exhausted. He looks at me, holding María. "Goodbye pequeña María." He coughed. He told off his hat and held it close to his chest.
"Gracias." He whispered. He started to fade into golden sparkles with a deep exhale.
I looked down and felt Héctor grab my hand in comfort as María's cries filled the room.
Miguel's dog whines.
Héctor and I stand up, and he brings his drink to the sky before drinking it. "Goodbye, amgio." I whispered as I grabbed Chicharrón's hat that fell to the ground and put it back in the hammock. 'Goodbye.' I thought to myself.
