Some routine, or more like a certain understanding, had formed between, had formed between, had formed between you as the days went by. You both still spend your days like usual.
Him in his dark corners or on the rooftop trying to make trash weapons and watching people like a creep. You, cutting away at brains and performing whatever surgery you woke up craving on dead men with Ann. And you still partied at night.
Admittedly, the number of games you were playing had decreased. They had started losing their charm, and Hatter usually held emergency meetings when most people were away anyway.
Nobody had noticed a difference. You and Chishiya knew, but the sneaking away and the smug looks you sent each other had barely affected you two.
But Ann had more than noticed. She was growing more annoyed with Chishiya by the day, knowing he must have had a plan to do something like this, but having no proof or good reason to suspect him other than the fact he was... Chishiya.
How could you not see it? She would kill herself before she accepted that you had fallen stupidly and blindly in love. And despite her best efforts to be with you all the time, she knew she was failing to keep you away.
"Ann! Game night! You are coming with us today right?"
"I doubt we will be in the same group--"
"Oh, I got that covered don't worry." You shrugged and pulled her along, knowing she would want to drive the car. In the end, you three were the only ones in the car, and you sat shotgun while Chishiya gladly had the backseat to himself.
"What are you doing?" I turned, trying to peak into what the man was trying to make now. He rolled his eyes and tucked it in his jacket, giving me a tired look. "Oh come on, maybe I can help. I helped with the taser--"
He cleared his throat, his eyes trailing over to Ann's seat. A rather subtle way of telling me to shut it. "Ann is my Kuina, you can talk."
"Did you think for a second that Kuina knows my plans?" He scoffed, crossing his hands as he glared at Ann through the mirror. She ignored him entirely and turned her eyes to the road.
"See? She couldn't care less about you. Now what is it?'
"Just turn around, I don't want to talk to you." He sighed. You frowned and reached back, snatching the earphones he had tucked in his pockets despite his efforts to stop you. "Earphones?! Seriously, blondie, it turns out you are really sweet."
"Who told you they are for you? Give them back." He demanded, trying to take them back but you swatted his hand away as you went through the songs.
"If it's not for me how come my favourite songs are in here?" You raised a smug eyebrow, handing them back to him. He quickly took them and put them in his pocket again, looking at you with a pissed glare.
"Maybe we just like the same songs."
"I doubt it. I didn't even know you listened to music, I have never seen you."
"Everyone listens to music." He sighed, thankful you had finally arrived in the arena. He quickly got out of the car and eyed the building, recognizing it as an old TV quiz show. It had to be diamonds.
But the game had four players, meaning you would need someone else on your team you didn't know. And while he didn't like Ann, she was the best Diamond player- after him, of course, and it would be an easy win if he were to join your team. But if you all worked individually and depended on each other...
A near scream of yours snapped him out of his thoughts as you ran past him and straight into the guy in front of him, engulfing him in a hug. "I thought you would be dead by now!"
"Why is it always something deadly or gory the first thing with you?" The man sighed, happily hugging you back and messing with your hair. "I didn't see you around at all."
"You only play when you have to, it makes sense--"
"Not anymore! You are looking at a changed man. I kinda adopted your whole 'I don't give a crap' thing." He shrugged, his focus shifting on Ann and Chishiya that were blandly staring at him. "Your friends..?"
"Ann, my apocalypse bestie, and Chishiya. I used to work with him."
Chishiya rolled his eyes at the introduction, losing interest immediately. Ann only managed a slight nod before she went to grab phones for all of you. "I'm assuming he will be the other team member?"
"Team? The game hasn't been announced yet." You looked around trying to make sense of the space. Before Chishiya could explain, Kenji started talking.
"This building was used for a TV show. Two teams of four answered questions, and the ones with the most points won. Glad I found your smartass at the right time."
How annoying, Chishiya thought, watching the guy talk non-stop. He didn't mind him at first, but now he was getting more annoying by the second. No, he should be happy their last teammate is smart in case the game is changed and it's someone who can carry their weight.
Probably. Chishiya wouldn't care if he died at all. Maybe your bad mood would be a bother but you wouldn't be sad so...
So he was now thinking of your feelings. How bothersome. Since when did he do that? But it didn't matter, he can care all he wants until it was time for his plan to come through and you became Hatter's bait.
No matter how close you were getting or how he enjoyed your company you were still his very own personal plague.
The longer this went on and the closer he got, the more you infected his brain and his thoughts. A different bait even passed by his mind once. You were too smart for him to just let you die like that.
It was fair to want to beat your competition, the only competition you have ever known. And in a world like this, for the death of such a rival, the only right answer was beating them in a game and getting them killed.
But he wouldn't change it, there was no one else viable for his plan and he had put too much effort into this.
The screen of the phones lit up and the game was announced, having the same title as the show and the same rules. The game masters must have been too bored to make a game tonight. Annoyingly enough, they took the team part too seriously and the game was a Club one instead of Diamond.
Club cards were anything but needed at the beach, with over half the people there being Club experts. At least the game would be fun with you there even if you didn't compete directly this time.
"Alright then, let's get this over with. We gotta get back and I can't wait to give Kenji a Beach tour!"
