"And it's unfair to pull you into my chaos,"
- Lovebomb, Nessa Barrett—————————————————
KAI"You tryna steal my spot," I heard a voice from behind me.
Her voice.
I turned to her, taking the cigarette out of my mouth and blowing out the smoke.
I was on the roof and it was late at night, maybe around nine or ten? I wasn't sure but even in the darkness I could see the redness under her telling me she had been crying. She had a tired smile on her face.
I looked her over before focusing on her face as if I could get the answers on what was wrong just through looking at her.
Suddenly she turned her face to the side and looked around.
She glanced back at me. "I'm gonna you probably wanted to be alone sorry-"
"No." I cut her off. "Stay."
"It's fine I should g-"
"Moon, stay."
I paid no mind to the name that fell from me because I found it fitted her well.
But she certainly paid attention to it.
She looked back at me fully. Confusion lacing her face. Dark brown eyebrows were suddenly a little closer to each other.
"Moon?" She questioned to which I just shrugged in response.
She sighed and let the door close fully behind her but stayed by it.
I took another pull from the cigarette. "Come here."
Her arms wrapped around her midsection as she slowly moved closer. She had on a grey hoodie that she looked like she was drowning in. She had on black jeans along with black shoes.
"Why were you crying?"
She blinked at me, her mouth parting before closing again. "It doesn't matter-"
"It matters to you," I paused. "So it matters to me."
She looked at me analyzing me for something I wasn't quite sure of. "You don't even know me."
"Maybe but it still matters."
She let out a small breath that was kind of mixed in with a laugh as she focused her sight on the sky instead.
"What's going on in that head?" I said after a moment of silence.
She didn't respond for a while and I let the silence fill the roof waiting patiently for her response. "You don't wanna know."
"Maybe I do."
"Trust me you don't and I don't want to talk about it."
I nodded, not wanting to push her. She leaned against the wall as was I and only a few feet separated us.
It was quiet as she continued staring at the sky filled with stars and the moon while I stared at her.
A question lingered in my head shouting at me to ask though I knew it was probably wrong to, but I couldn't stop it from slipping past my lips.
"Why?"
"Hmm?" She questioned, glancing at me.
My brother is probably glaring at me right now but I continued anyway. "Why'd you try to do it?"
She froze and I knew she knew what I was asking without any other context.
She blinked at me once, twice, a third time before her lips finally parted and she pushed herself off the wall. "Uhh I really should go."
"Wait, I'm sorry."
"It's fine but I'm still gonna g-" she started to walk away.
I reached for her arm. "Moon, do-"
She let out a small hiss and muttered a curse under her breath as my hand wrapped itself around her forearm.
I stepped closer lifting the sleeve of her hoodie which she tried to pull back down but I didn't let her as my eyes fell on to the bandage wrapped around her arm. A part of it had turned slightly red from cuts I knew she made.
I could feel the resistance as she tried to pull her arm from my grip but I didn't process it as the only thing on my mind was what I saw.
It wasn't until I heard her voice and the desperation in it that I looked up at her.
Her face was turned to the side as she blinked rather quickly in order to hold back tears.
"Kai, can you please let go?"
I let go of her hand to which she immediately took back and pulled the sleeve down.
"I'm sorry ok don't cry. It's ok." I said. "But Hayden, I need you to do something for me."
"What?" She questioned in a low tone as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"If you ever feel this way again I want you to call me ok? Can you do that?" I asked her seriously.
She looked at me, brows coming together and eyelashes slightly wet from tears. "Why?"
"Because I don't want you doing this to yourself. Can I see your phone?"
She slowly pulled the black phone out her pocket and handed it to me.
After putting my number in and texting myself I held it out to her. When she grabbed it I didn't release my grip just yet.
When she looked at me waiting for me to let go I spoke. "I gave you my number. I need you to call me no matter the time, ok?"
She started to nod but I shook my head. "I need to hear you say you will."
"I promise." She said and I flinched unintentionally at that.
For a moment I was frozen before I shook my head speaking up again. "Don't promise me just say you'll do it ok?"
She looked at me with a questioning look but didn't push it and instead she rephrased her words. "I'll call you."
"Good."
I really didn't want to pull her into my fucked up life but I couldn't let her do this.
