The candles were lit in the middle of the vast, pitch black room. Five hooded figures stood in a circle, enclosing the small beacons of light. The tallest of the figures looked into the flames, starting to mumble incantations. The others kept their heads bowed, slightly afraid of their master.
"Demetrius...any news on Christopher?" The master asked the hooded figure standing next to him. His tone was surprisingly soft, and his voice made the others relax slightly.
"No, Serpius, nothing has changed. Our plan is falling perfectly into place." Slowly, Serpius turned his head towards Demetrius and his power radiated across the room.
"Did you say 'our' plan?" Serpius asked with a trace of irritation lacing his otherwise soft tone. The others didn't dare breathe.
"N - no, I didn't mean - " Demetrius was cut off by a sudden chuckle from Serpius.
"I know you didn't mean it. Just a small slip of the tongue. It happens to the best of us." Demetrius breathed out the breath that he hadn't realised he'd been holding. The others also seemed to relax slightly, their shoulders moving down in unison.
"Thank you, Master." Serpius' lip twitched beneath his hood as he attempted a smile, speaking once more.
"Although...I do have to make sure that this never happens again. Do you understand me, brother?"
"I understand completely." Demetrius said quickly, shakily.
"I'm not sure you do." As he said these words, Serpius lifted his hands to gently push his hood back. His brown eyes surveyed Demetrius' hooded shape, looking him up and down. The other hooded figures in the circle stole glances at Serpius nervously. With a slight tilt of his head, Serpius' eyes started to glow bright crimson. His eyebrow twitched suddenly and Demetrius burst into flames. His screams died away as quickly as they started as he disintegrated into a pile of ash on the marble floor. Serpius replaced his hood.
"Ms. X?" He looked at one of the other figures. Ms. X trembled as her name was said and raised her head to meet his gaze. She faintly saw the glint of Serpius' teeth beneath his hood as he smiled.
"Serpius?" She replied shakily and he started to walk around the circle of people towards her. She quickly wiped her clammy hands on her cloak.
"Oh, my dear, don't be afraid. I don't want to hurt you." He growled softly in her ear, placing a hand lightly on her back. "I do have a small errand for you, though." Ms. X nodded quickly and felt beads of sweat start to form on her forehead.
"Yes, Master?"
"I need you to take this small pill to Christopher. Make sure he takes it."
"What will it do to him?" She asked nervously and the group took in a collective breath. Serpius chuckled.
"Well, it's very simple. It will kill him, of course." He purred, dropping the pill into Ms. X's hand. She started to walk from the circle, praying that she wouldn't burst into flames. Her legs sped up of their own accord, and soon she was tripping over her robe and tumbling to the floor. The pill fell out of her hand. With panic screaming in her mind, she felt around the floor frantically, before her hand clasped around something small and pill-shaped. Sighing with relief, she stood up, brushed herself off and started to walk again at a more moderate pace. But could she be sure she picked up the right pill? After all, their coven was gathered in an old, abandoned mental asylum. Not to mention that Serpius had killed a lot in the past, usually using some form of drug. Although he was a magician, he was also a scientist, which meant he loved to create strange potions and tamper with genetic coding. Christopher would never see it coming. She felt a little sorry for the guy, in a way. She'd never even met him and she loved his music. But orders were orders. There was no way she could ever disobey Serpius or she'd be engulfed in an inferno, like Demetrius.
She reached the huge double doors, leading to the outside world. She hadn't been out there in years, and absentmindedly wondered if much had changed. Pushing the doors open, she gazed out into the dark night sky and inhaled, feeling the fresh air fill her nostrils. The sound of bird call was absent and she wasn't surprised. No bird would ever want to fly near here. Her eyes narrowed suddenly as she heard a twig snap off to her right. Turning quickly, she caught a glimpse of a person running into the shadows. Her feet propelled her forward, and she pursued the intruder. But as quickly as they had appeared, they were gone. Exhaling, she started to walk towards the gates, leading out into the world. Christopher's fate was sealed.
Do you think that pill is really going to kill Christopher? Please vote if you liked it and leave comments :)
