In the midst of my emotional distress, I should have known that letting Pete drive was a terrible mistake.
"Can you slow down?! We're not in a Fast and Furious movie, man!"
"But you said we need to find Danny and Arny with urgency!"
"I- how many speeding tickets have you received?"
"Uh-"
"Actually? Forget I even asked. Just drive slower, please."
The car had finally slowed down and I took a breath of relief. Then I remembered that we could've been tailed by the police. I peered out the window, but I didn't see anybody. Not a single soul. It's like everybody disappeared at the same time.
I made a face at Pete, who knew what I was thinking. It's the bestie telepathy.
"Um, where is everyone?" He asked.
"I dunno. What the hell is happening?" I sighed, exasperated.
So many thoughts were swirling through my head. Danny and Arny couldn't have wiped out a whole town of people in the midst of their fighting? No, they're more civilized than that.
As we reached the outskirts of town, I felt a type of unease course through my body. I rolled down the window and looked up. And to my horror, the sky was covered by a translucent barrier. Within the membrane of the barrier was fire and thunder dancing about. It seems like the boys made this barrier!
"Oi, look up! It looks like we crossed a barrier they made!" I exclaimed.
"Oh, for real?" Pete said as he looked up from the front window.
We had to get a good look at the barrier. Pete spotted a tree so he took a hard right and swerved near a tree. He parked the car and we got out. We stared up at the force field surrounding us. Maybe I could break it. I haven't tried to use my new powers after I wedged the vine between Danny and Arny. I could try again, it couldn't hurt.
As I raised up my hands, a vine shot out of the ground. It soared up to the barrier and slammed the surface. A booming sound reverberated throughout the barrier.
"Aw, dammit! It didn't break! This barrier is fucking unbreakable then." I said.
"Well, if it makes you feel better, you gave the signal that you're here and ready to kick ass!" Pete attempted to reassure me.
My mood became brighter, and I smiled. This has to be umpteenth time I have to say this, but, I'm so grateful for my best friend. Especially now. He's been through thick and thin with me since we've met. But he's never expressed how he felt about the situation that we're in, he always been supportive of my relationship with Danny.
"Hey, Pete? Are you, like, okay? With all if this, I mean."
"Ummm, well, now that you've asked....I'm not entirely sure. This whole thing from the start has been so weird, you know? I've been attempting to wrap my head around everything, but I think I'm getting it."
I rested my shoulder on his and I brought him into a tight hug. As per usual, Pete's grip was always tighter than mine. Then and there I felt a reassurance in his my friend's heart, and I couldn't be happier.
"Are you okay, Y/n?" He asked.
"Would it be bad to say 'no'?" I responded, then laughed shakily.
Pete sighed and rubbed my back as I tried my best to hold back all the tears. He was the only reason why I couldn't cry.
I haven't gotten time to stop and think. It was one thing after the next. I never knew how to express myself properly since I was a child, so I'm not sure how to put this situation into words. All of this has left me speechless. I just wanted to love, now I have to change fate. For Danny and Arny.
Before I could even thank Pete for being here for me, the sound of an explosion stung aggressively in our ears. The ground shook with a raw, awful vibration.
"What the hell was that?!" Pete shrieked.
"Oh shit, it's them! It's the boys, Pete! They're close! They're close!" I exclaimed, almost in tears.
Another explosion raised with a terrifying crescendo. I had to reach them before it was too late. The distance seemed far, but if we didn't waste any time, we could get there quickly.
So with a new conviction, I dragged Pete by the arm and we ran in the direction of the explosions. Flowers were growing with every step I took.
Danny's POV
Stay focus. Chin high. Stay alert. Follow his movements.
You cannot let him beat you.
I swung my bident at Arny's legs, in which he dodged. He threw his lightning bolt at me and in a flash I was blinded by a bright light.
Stay focus. Chin high. Stay alert. Unfortunately, I couldn't follow his movements. Arny threw his second lightning bolt and I was blinded again. In the midst of the ambush, I swung my bident once again and I felt it hit a body.
"You've grown sloppy, Danny. I expected better." Arny cooed.
"Oh, fuck off! Do not brag simply because you have a long ranged weapon!" I hissed.
Allowing Arny to beat me would be a destruction to my pride and I wouldn't be able to protect Y/n. I could rely on Pete, but he's a mortal, he would've gotten hurt in the process. I couldn't allow that.
Once I regained my vision, I used my wings to catapult myself over the thunder child. I snapped my fingers, and a fire ball engulfed my hand. Before Arny could turn around, I made my shot into his back. I didn't hesitate to make another swing with the bident into his ribs.
"You call that sloppy? Hm?" I scoffed. "Or are you afraid to actually fight me properly?"
Of course, that got a raise out of him. He swung the bolts at my face, and I hurriedly parried out the way. I needed space, I needed a plan before he gets too close. Unfortunately, Arny had gotten faster. Now we were bound to a violent tango. I wasn't a good dancer, but I could not falter. If I did, I know I would've left a beautiful goddess behind to suffer.
Then and there, I was given a new wave of determination. I started to match the thunder child's speed with my own. We were both filled with a festering rage. Our weapons swung and clashed into each other, we forgot about our godly powers. It was a test of raw strength and how we perceived love.
"Oooo, you're getting sloppy, big boy. Do you need to rest?" I mocked, twirling my bident innocently between my fingers.
By then, Arny was heaving. He stared at me with a murderous intent. He wanted me gone, and of course that wasn't going to happen.
"You're an asshole," was all he could say through his continuous pants.
"Right back at you, mate." I said.
The thunder child growled and lunged after me; we were at it again. Now we were matching speeds perfectly. When he swung, I blocked perfectly. When he moved, I moved to knock him down. I knew I was pissing him off. Good. He was doing the same thing to me.
At this point, I was having too much fun. Well, too much to the point where I wasn't paying attention. I didn't expect the two of the thunder bolts to be thrown at my face. The blinding lights exploded in my face and I staggered back. That gave him....five seconds to attack? So I took four seconds to blindly swing my weapon at my target.
Once the curtain of light lifted from my eyes, I was met with Arny readying his final move. I had been weakened. That son of a bitch.
I had prepared myself to be stabbed right in the gut by the thunder bolts. Without any explanation, the ground began to shake. A hedge of flowers sprouted up to divide us. We fell to the ground and looked the flowers in confusion. Then I quickly understood where this came from. My head turned, and I saw Y/n and Pete standing before us. I couldn't hide the smile that tugged my lips.
"Alright, that's fucking enough!" She yelled. She looked angry. She looked tired.
But she looked different. She looked like a real goddess. Something changed in her after the past few months. She had gotten stronger. Now that she's the agent of Persephone, her strength was visual.
Then I felt a pang of guilt that pained my chest.
I had dragged her into my selfishness.
(A/n: Sorry for the long wait! I've been so busy with school and all, so thank you for being so patient with me!)
