David pov
David: kids time to get up.
Lila was first downstairs and Liam was second
Sheryl: where's James?
Liam: he's probably still sleeping
David: I'll go check on him
I went upstairs and knocked on his door. No answer. I walked in and he was still fast asleep.
David: hey kiddo time to get up.
No answer
David: come on kiddo
No answer
I started shaking him awake
James: hmm
David: you scared me there kiddo
He slowly started to wake
David: five minutes then downstairs
I went downstairs
Sheryl: he okay?
David: he scared me a little. It took a while to wake him up. I had to shake him awake
Sheryl: he's probably still drained from yesterday.
David: probably
Sheryl: I've got to go to work now so I'll see you later

James pov
I want to go back to sleep. I feel so ill. My head was killing, my neck felt stiff and hurt to move, and I felt cold and weird. I stayed laying in bed until I heard footsteps towards my door.
David: come on it's been five minutes James.
He walked in and turned on the light.
As soon as the light went on my eyes felt like they would explode. It felt like it sent daggers into my eyes
James: ah turn it off. Please. It hurts.
I quickly covered my eyes
James: the lights hurting
David: what do you mean?
James: my eyes. The light hurts it.
David went and turned the light off.

I sat up in my bed. For some reason the room started spinning. I just sat and hoped it would go which it did.
James: I don't feel good
David: What's up?
James: Head and neck hurt and I'm cold
David: It's not cold buddy imma check your temperature okay I'll be back
James: Mhm
When he left I went back to sleep

David pov
I went out to the hallway.
David: can someone run up the thermometer and my phone please
Liam ran up the stairs with them.
Liam: he okay?
David: he's not feeling well
Liam: oh okay do you want me to take Lila in?
David: yeah please
Liam: alright
Liam left and I went back into James's room and he didn't look good. He looked all sweaty and pale. Then I realised he fell back to sleep.
David: James I need you to wake up for me kiddo
I shook him awake and he slowly woke up
James: tired
David: I know but I need you to stay awake for me
James: I'll try

I took his temperature and it was 40°C.
David: shit. You got a high fever okay. I'm gonna ring 999
James: 'm fine
I rang 999 and they said they were sending out an ambulance immediately. They told me to check for a rash. While still on the phone I check for a rash.
David: Hey buddy
James: hurts
David: I know kiddo. you wanna cover your eyes whilst I turn the light on?
James: mhm
I waited till his eyes were covered and then turned the light on. I begin to look for the rash
David: Shit he has a rash on his arms and back
Operator: Okay we need to do a test. get a glass and place it on the rash to see if it disappears
I get a glass and does as he says
David: It's still there
Operator: the paramedics should be with you soon

James pov
James: I don't feel well
David: I know kiddo I know but we will go to the hospital and they will make you feel better
I feel like I'm gonna be sick. My stomach is cramping so hard so I hold my stomach. I try to warn him
James: Sick
I ended up vomiting everywhere.
David cleaned me up and then the paramedics came.

David pov
James was just sick so I had to clean him up then the paramedics came. They took his vitals and they weren't good. His heart rate was high and his temperature increased a little more than the last time i took it. On the way I quickly rang Sheryl.
Sheryl: is everything okay?
David: I'm taking James to the hospital. He's really ill and struggling to stay awake
Sheryl: shit okay. I'll see you when you get here

We finally arrived at the hospital.

James was rushed in and admitted straight away.
David: What do you think is wrong with him?
Nurse April: By what we've been told my guess is meningitis but we need to do some tests to confirm.
Dr Hendrix: Because we all assume it's meningitis and he has the textbook symptoms we're gonna start him on antibiotics now to increase his chance of a full recovery.
David: Okay um can I stay?
Dr Hendrix: Of course
David: can you also page my wife Sheryl Adams
Nurse April came in to put in an iv and take his blood. James hated the hospital and needles and began panicking when he realised what April was about to do.
James: No n-no no want it
David: It's okay buddy it's to help them make you better
James: No I'm scared. They'll hurt me.
David: How about I sit with you? Would that make you feel better?
James: mhm
I sat with him and he watched Fresh Prince of Bel Air on my phone. April then began the IV and blood test. Throughout he whimpered abit but was too focused on my phone
April: All done little man. You was so brave.
Dr Hendrix: To confirm meningitis we also have to do a lumbar puncture.
David: Okay but can you put him under cause he has ADHD so finds it difficult to stay still?
Dr Hendrix: Of course
David: Thanks
They do the lumbar puncture.
Nurse April: He'll begin to wake up in a few hours
They all left and Sheryl walked in.
Sheryl: ah my poor baby
David: they said it's likely it is meningitis so they started him on antibiotics already
Sheryl: okay. Do you want anything?
David: no I'm fine. I'm gonna ring his brothers later and let them know.
Sheryl: yeah
Sheryls pager went off.
Sheryl: anything happens tell them to page me 911
David: okay
Sheryl left. an hour later the doctors came in.

Dr Hendrix: Results are in bacterial meningitis. Seeing as we started him on antibiotics early he has a fair chance. He will have to stay in a few days tho.
David: Alright thanks
Nurse April: No problem I'm just gunna push more antibiotics then I'll leave yous to it.
Dr Hendrix: any questions?
David: How bad can it get? Like would he have any long term effects.
Dr Hendrix: Possibly. There's a chance of hearing loss, seizures, memory and concentration problems etc.
David: but he already has seizures and concentration problems
Dr Hendrix: then in that case it could worsen it.
David: so he'd need stronger medication
Dr Hendrix: possibly but I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. He should be waking up soon. Any problems let us know.
David: thank you
They left and I messaged Liam
David: at the hospital with James. Mums working so not sure if anyone will be home. Chris will take you and Lila to his until one of us can come home. x
I then messaged James's brothers
David: hi Cory its David. Could you and Jordan give me a call when you're free. it's important
I was on my phone for a while until I heard mumbling.
James: No no dad I'm sorry. Please. Dad I'll be good. I didn't mean to. Dad. I'm sorry
David: hey James. It's David. Your not there. Your safe
He still want calming down. I touched his arm and he flinched.
James: I'm sorry. Please don't hurt me. Dad.
He started thrashing about and started screaming and crying. A nurse came in and sedated him.
Nurse April: his temperature seems to have risen. It being high probably caused hallucinations which is why he was so hysterical. I'll give him some medicine and it should bring his temperature back down
She pushed the medicine and left. I had a little nap and a few hours later was woken by some small movements and groaning.

David: Hey kiddo
James: d-David?
David: You okay?
I looked at him and he was just staring into space.
David: James
No answer
David: Hey James
I was clicking his fingers infront off him. No response
A few seconds later he started blinking
David: you okay?
James: Feel weird head hurt
I realised what this meant and called for his doctors. At first he began twitching then he was fully convulsing.
